On two separate occasions I have dealt with very similar people.
In one case the person was isolated during most of the day, and I befriended him. I would drink coffee with him first thing in the morning, and say hello when I didn't get the chance. One day out of the blue I asked him how he was doing... his reply lead to his immediate but tactful dismissal.
On another occasion years later I experienced the same situation. I took the person to lunch a few times. I got to know him and found that he was quite possible the smartest guy within a three block radius. To this day I make an attempt to eat lunch with this gent once every few weeks.
So the common thread is what...?
