Looking at putting a brake on a gun that comes with the muzzle already threaded 5/8-24... which would be better for 'timing' a brake like a JP Enterprises standard compensator (JPTRE-324, to be specific): the supplied crush washer or a jam nut (with a little Loctite)?
A gunsmith timing it looks the best, but I think jam nuts make a lot of sense. You can do it yourself and save the expense of hiring a gunsmith. I doubt you would need loctite unless you do not plan on removing it for cleaning.
USAMU gunsmiths found the more you tighten anything around muzzle threads the more you can potentially get the end of the barrel to stretch or "Trumpet" -- affecting your groups.
A brake, compensator, or flash-hider that's torqued on too tight is a whole lot worse than one that's aligned top-dead-center and shimmed and lok-tited
So... given the choice, the jam nut and a little bit o' loctite would be preferable to the crush washer, with the intent of not stretching the threads or causing other problems?
Try threading it on to see where it lines up first. A trip to the belt sander to take a little off the back may be all that's needed to index it correctly. A file would work just as well. Neither of those methods are as nice as proper gunsmith installation, but I really hate the appearance of jam nuts and crush washers. I always use red Loctite on brakes as well.
