Surely someone here has one, has had one, or knows someone who does/did.

What are the in's and out's of having one?

Are you required to keep meticulous records like a regular FFL? (A good idea anyway, but still)

Are you subject to bullshit random inspections any time someone at ATF gets bored?

Any caveats that aren't generally known/discussed?

It's a $30 application and I have a bit of a fetish for old military rifles... So I was curious.

if interested in older stuff,> 50yr a must have. saves transfer BS and you can send a copy easily. had 1 about 8yrs (?) when collecting mosins and mausers. must keep records. good thing is when you decide to exit the process and not renew, you are not required to turn record book in. you are subject to searches with no warrant. never heard of that happening,but... getting one is pretyy easy,or it was 12 years ago. now?? if you look on gunboards.com,there would be a lot of discussion on there. it is a very knowledgeable site.
rules can be funny. eg sks are C&R but chinese ones are not-some kind of clinton/china thing. eg loewe arg mausers are antique,no license. DWMs are C&R. it is USUALLY antique pre 1898. NFA rules still apply. not gonna get a WW@ thompson that way. like said well worth having and anybody on here is already on 5+ data bases,so WTF?

Used to have one when surplus handguns and rifles were plentiful. Fill out paperwork with fee. Get fingerprints and send application to Feds and CLEO. Your license will get mailed to you and you make several copies. Only sign the copies and send them out. Once you buy a firearm, you ut it in your bound book or notepad. Usual stuff, where you acquired, date, serial number, etc.
No one comes to your door for inspections and even if they did, you can go to them. If you let it lapse, you dont have to turn your paperwork in. Havent had mine in 15 years.
