As far as I know after doing a lot of searching on the internet and YouTube, what I'm about to say I have done, has never been done before. On the other hand if it has I wish I would have found it long before now as it would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

I've seen a lot about the new Ruger American Gen 2 rifles so I picked up a couple. The first is a 5.56 NATO Ranch that I installed a Timney single stage trigger in and then dropped the barreled action into a Magpul Hunter stock. The 5.56 has done well which leads to the topic at hand. I picked up the 20" 6.5 Grendel and decided to do the same thing to it only I installed the two stage Timney trigger in the 6.5 Grendel.

The initial Magpul stock was set up for STANAG magazines which wouldn't feed 100% reliably for nothing. Different magazines and even trying to adjust the feed lips of the magazine helped but wasn't a 100% fix. So, after doing some looking I discovered that MDT makes an AICS magazine for 6mm ARC/6.5 Grendel. I also after much to do was able to get the AICS magwell from Magpul. Getting the magwell and then getting it set up and installed so it would work was an absolute dumpster fire and there's no reason for it to be as difficult as it ended up being. My advice if you want to go the route I'm going to continue to explain, buy the Magpul AICS stock or the MDT LSS-XL Gen 2 AICS chassis.

After getting the magwell put together and filing off three tabs on the aluminum skeleton chassis in the Magpul stock I could then effectively use the MDT AICS magazines.

Initial testing was better than expected and got better as I continued to reload the magazine and cycle rounds through the action. There was still a hangup here and there which I was still less than pleased with. It was always the last round that would not feed reliably. Since I load 6.5 Grendel I decided to take advantage of the increased OAL the magazine will accommodate. I determined that a 123 gr ELD-M touched the lands at 2.368" OAL. I then loaded up a dummy round at 2.338" OAL, 0.030" off the lands. I then spent the next five minutes at least loading that dummy round in the magazine and then chamberig that dummy round. It works reliably now without fail.

The long story long of this is, this does work and does indeed improve the rifle. Is it worth it? I can only answer that for me and for me it's definitely worth it. Granted in the end with the magazines, trigger, stock, 20 MOA scope rail, rings, scope, scope level, Area 419 Hellfire brake (I despise radial brakes), I have effectively turned a $550 rifle into a $2,000+ rifle. The added good news though is it shoots various loads quite well and it's not even broke in yet. I'm looking forward to redeveloping loads being able to take advantage of the longer OAL the MDT magazines will accommodate. Hope this possibly helps someone figure out how to make their Ruger American 6.5 Grendel reliable.

“It’s not the destination, but the journey…” 😜

I like to tinker and improve cheap rifles, too.
Makes me think I’m getting a deal when in reality I probably spend close to custom rifle cost! But it keeps me occupied in the cold months here, and keeps the costs spread out which the better half is more OK with I’ve learned.

Glad you got that 6.5 Gr working. Now it’s time to burn some powder! Pictures are always welcome. 👍

Yeah, I bought a Ruger American Ranch .300 BLK back in 2022, threw a Timney in it, put all the Anarchy Outdoors accessories on it, and put it into the regular Magpul Hunter short-action AICS stock (the STANAG stock had not been released yet), and used Magpul AICS .223 mags. It cycled fine. If you searched hard enough, you're sure to find some of my posts about it on here... You could have saved yourself some time, money, and headache if you had just started with an AICS chassis/stock for it. Then you would have only needed Magpul or MDT AICS .223 mags.

Also, I run the MDT steel 12rd 6mm ARC / 6.5 Grendel mags in my 16" Christensen Arms MPR chambered in 6mm ARC. Bought it back in 2022, as well... They run flawlessly.

Actually no, I searched Google many different ways but my search was 6.5 Grendel specific. Your posts for 300 Blackout wouldn't have shown up in any of my searches regardless of where I searched, here included. My 5.56 Ranch as stated is in a Magpul Hunter stock as well and runs just fine in the STANAG configuration. Also as stated I'm running the MDT AICS magazines specifically for the 6mm AR/6.5 Grendel. They are the 12 round but 10 or 12 doesn't really matter. What mattered is they made an unreliable rifle, reliable. No 223 Remington AICS magazine is going to fix a 6.5 Grendel. While many have tried to make 308 Winchester AICS magazine work with 6.5 Grendel by adjusting the feed lips or adding a spacer and shorter follower and different spring, those things are still not a real fix without a lot of luck. I wanted a real fix and fortunately this as stated initially has been a real fix.

You're overexplaining things to people, who already know what they're talking about. I've been shooting and reloading for 6.5 Grendel for 15+ years, I'm well aware it uses a different magazine & follower than a .223/.300 BLK, and won't cycle right in modded .308 Win mags. Hell, I remember when Bill Alexander invented the 6.5 Grendel in 2003.

Going back and re-reading, I did misspeak and said you would need "Magpul or MDT .223 AICS mags"... What I was referring to was your .223 version. I should have specified that to keep it separate from the 6.5 Grendel discussion.

My point was an oversimplification based on what you are trying to make grotesquely overcomplicated. What you have accomplished is not anything new. The Ruger American series has been around quite a while now...There's a sizable aftermarket and people have figured out plenty of work-arounds for them. There's also plenty of posts and threads here on the Hide of people running Ruger Americans in 6.5 Grendel in regular Ruger American short-action stocks that use full-size AICS mags (which is what I did). What others did might not have been the American Ranch in particular, but the American Predator is the same damn gun, other than barrel length, and there are quite a few posts and threads here about that same scenario with the American Predator 6.5 Grendel being converted to AICS.
