Ok so for some reason i always have to have some sort of project going and i have no need to change my current match rifle.

However i do want this sport to keep growing and i have a plan to build some rifles that would allow guys to give it a shot and if they don't like it at least it would be a great all around hunting rifle.

So i have selected the thompson center icon as a base rifle because it has alot of features that i really like currently and you can find pretty good deals on them

Integral base
Integral lug
bedding block/similar to a chassis
3 lug bolt=short throw
3 rd mag
adjustable trigger

So my question is if these were to come with a custom barrel what would you pay for one? I was thinking $1250 would be a pretty good deal for rifle with those features and a custom barrel.

I am going to limit these to one caliber so which one would you recommend 243, 6.5cm, 260, 708, etc....

I may even do a group buy on these so if you have any suggestions or are interested let me know. I am not doing these to make money i am doing it because i want more shooters to get involved in this sport and this seems like a good intro.

You could add one of these optics and a harris and be ready to rock for under $2000 and under 9lbs

I don't own one so i would love to know what max oal the magazine will hold.

Also interested in your load for the 30tc?

thanks scott

I'm actually amazed that this action/gun hasn't become more popular, seems like you get a lot of features for a decent price. It comes with a lot of the features reserved for custom actions straight from the factory. Maybe its the lack of third party accessories and parts?

the problem with the ICON is the base is 0 MOA, I found the venture to be a better platform to build on. I had EGW build me 20 MOA HD base, XLR made me a chassis and RW Snyder barreled them. All in all it turned out real nice.

thats really sweet adam but i was thinking more budget oriented by keeping the original stock on.

Even with a 0moa base putting on a scope like this one vortex viper pst 2.5x10x44 29mrad elev. you would have plenty of adjustment to make it well past 1000yds. hell the single turn s&b's only have 13mils. if guys would be more realistic about what they actually need it wouldn't be a big deal. I can't honestly remember ever going over 15mils of elevation in a scope. farthest i have let one fly is 1450.

remember most 243,260, 708 are around 8 mils to 1000yds!!!

Not familiar with the action myself but I have heard some good things about them. Would these have a action job performed on them? Any accuracy guarantee? Exactly what model were you referring to, the classic or the precision hunter? And would the barrel contour be sporter weight only? Definitely interested as a classy hunting rifle was my next project. Thanks for even considering putting this together.

Re: Custom T/C ICON? All Around rifle?

Well i am looking into it currently but i think it will probably be a 6.5creedmoor so that there is factory match ammo available to your average shooter. Not sure on the action work as of right now but hopefully they will be true enough they don't need it. They would probably be built on the fancy walnut stock classic icon. they would more than likely be a nice hunting rifle that would be accurate enough to try your hand at matches but that wouldn't be there main purpose plinking/hunting would be.

My dad has two, a 308 and a 7-08. They both shoot way under an inch. The 7-08 consistently shoots .4"-.6". That said, I would really like one with a Rem varmint profile barrel and one of the high grade walnut stocks for hunting. Interchangeable bolt handles are another nice feature.

That is exactly what i was thinking of building, just a basic good looking all around rifle at a reasonable price.

What caliber would be your preference?

Re: Custom T/C ICON? All Around rifle?

For deer, I am really liking the 7mm08. Ballistically superior to the 308 and lots of choices for hand loads and factory ammo. Both of the 7-08's I've loaded for were not picky with load development. The factory test target with my dads Icon was shot with 140gr federal fusion ammo and was .42" 3 shot group. A custom barrel with a faster twist would let you have more choices with the heavier Hornady and Berger bullets (162-180gr).

CDNN has weathershield (cerakote) and synthetic in 30TC for $399.
Ultrawood 30TC's with blued metal are $499. Field grade walnut with blued steel in 308, 22-250 are $599. I wonder what the 30TC's specs are. Does the synthetic stock still use a bedding block? Does anyone know what other cartridges could use the 30TC magazine? I guess the 30tc is a "medium action", would the short action calibers be built on the medium actions as well? I am really pondering this now.

the 30tc is the same as the rest of the short action actions, same mag as 308.

At this point i don't think i will be going forward with the project in bulk. i will probably build one for myself but thats it. I think mine will be a 243ai 8twist

243AI would be a good round, what bullets will a 8 twist work with?

I can measure the mag for you,But I put a 168 LC match in it and it was full..

I use Factory Hornady,They have 3 loadings all with superformance 150sst 3000FPS..165sst 2850fps..150GMX 2900FPS..

I use it for hunting,But it realy is accurate,Test target in the box.51MOA at 100 yards with 150sst..

Re: Custom T/C ICON? All Around rifle?

I've actually been very interested in this idea- My thought was to go with a 20" barrel in .308, lighter profile with fluting. Likely stick with moly for the material so I could have it deep rust blued. Or skip the fluting and just bump up the profile one size from factory- the shorter length would likely off-set the larger profile and retain the same weight, but with better balance.
