Cutting down a heavy fluted barrel

Currently have a Howa 1500 chambered in 308 with a 20" heavy fluted barrel. Wanting to cut down to 16.5", but this will cut directly into the flutes and look like a gear shaft at the end. Has anyone cut a fluted barrel and threaded? Interested to see what that would look like or hear about negative performance results.

it looks ugly but if you put a good brake on it helps blend it

That is what my gunsmith said as well. Will be taking it in for him to check to out, but since it is a heavy barrel he was not too worried about that.

"heavy" is very subjective. I varmint contour barrel is considered a heavy profile, but its nothing to an m24/M40 or MTU contour. and a fluted varmint or sender type profile might certain not have enough wall thickness to cut back and thread
