Hi there,

I have been testing the water of target shooting with a Howa 308 varmint and a M70 300WSM. Both are in factory configuration. They are good rifles for the money, but have severe limitations. In the case of Howa, it has very limited after market accessory support. I recently found that Rifle Basix doesn't make a replacement trigger for the new two stage Howa triggers. The M70 is a light barrel hunting rifle that heats up too quickly for target shooting.

So I decided to get a rifle that has fully adjustable stock and heavy barrel.

I do reload so I am also open to try new calibers. My budge is $2K.

After some research, here is my list in the order of preference

1. CZ 750, 308, $1800 or so. It came with all the accessories except a bipod. The muzzle brake should help with recovery after shot.
My concern is again after market support: does anyone make a 20 MOA rail for it? can I find a smith to work on the trigger, replace the barrel or even re-chamber it to 260 in the future?

2. SSG 04, $2000 or so. I would get a 300 win mag, always wanted to reach further than a 308. It came with everything, including a bipod. I knew McMillan makes replacement stocks.
My concern is whether it is easy to have a smith to replace the barrel. I heard that SSG69 needs to go back to factory to replace barrel. What about SSG04?

3. T3 sporter, $1700 or so. I would get a 260 REM. This cartridge is the main reason I am considering it.
It didn't come with accessories such as rail or bipod. So it's cost is about the same as previous two. Tikka probably has the best after market support among the three.
It is a good looking rifle, but expensive for a Tikka. It is such a new rifle that I haven't found a good review yet. So whether its performance is on par with the other two is unknown.

Did I miss anything in this price range? Any known issue with my candidate rifles?

I would probably be happy with any of these rifles, but my budget only allows one. Your comments are highly appreciated.

Best,
Kevin

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

I would love to get a TRG at some point in life. I compared SSG 04 and TRG 22 side by side, the TRG 22 clearly has a better stock. But it is also in a different league in terms of cost. After adding muzzle brake and rail, a TRG will cost $1K more than a SSG 04. This is a real dilemma.

The T3 sporter has too many plastic parts for a $1700 gun. I am thinking about getting a CZ 750 to shoot for now, and upgrade to a TRG when more funds are available.

+1 on TRG.

If you are going to spend 2k on a rifle, TRG is a better choice.

cz 750 is a very good rifle, but is just a tacticool cz550, if they offer them at 1k or below, I will take it. (my cz550 is almost 10 years old)

ssg 04 , handle a couple of times at local range, like all Styer rifles, nothing special. 2k price range is a little high. My ssg69 with mcmillian stock shoots the same or better and 04 is a little out dated to me(lack of accessories rails), if you like styer, get ssg 08 or elite 08(ssg69 for almost 8 years).

T3 - pretty rifle, have no experience at all. But it's top of the line TRG is out there for just a little more $$.

Bump. I will buy a TRG if I can find one at decent price.

I remember it was around $2600 naked a couple of years ago. But it seems the price has gone up now. Eurooptics is selling one for $3048.

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

It's hard to beat a TRG, but a T3 Sporter would be cool. I think they're a little high though. Somehow adding that wood stock and the round bolt knob added 900+ to the price of a T3 varmint. They should have just used the old Master Sporter stock.

If you can find a T3 Varmint and put it in one of the several chassis available, and replace the plastic shroud, you'll have a pretty great setup for under 2k.

Correct. T3 varmint and a KRG chassis is a much better value. The old Tikka master sporter was only $1K. I don't think the laminated stock is worth $700.

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

Just get a T3 Lite or Hunter if you can't find the Varmint, re-barrel and re-stock it. Voila. Still be better value than the T3 Sporter and will probably only set you back $2k, maybe $2.5 if you don't want to shop around.

If you want a review for the T3 sporter, just look at the Varmint, SuperVarmint or Tactical. They're the same rifle just a different stock and overpriced because Beretta USA realised they can make more money by flogging the Sporters for twice as much as they're worth.

Also, talk to Pete Lincoln from Roedale Precision, they make aftermarket stocks and accessories for Howa rifles, he may be able to help you out should you wish to spend that 2k on tuning up the Howa.

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

My Howa varmint shoots 0.7 to little over one MOA most of the time, the best I have done is 0.6MOA at 300 yd. Pretty good for the $350 I paid. Good enough to hold me over for now.

I decided not to put more money into the Howa. It has very limited after market parts that are also expensive. I should have bought a Remington or Savage.

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

Check out a Local Cabelas Store if you have one near for a Tikka T3 Scout CTR rifle. $800-$900 Range. It's the Heavy Varmint 20' Barrel. Spend another $1K on a KRG and you have yourself a Dream Starting Setup. It'll be more than what you're expecting and looking for. Good Luck!

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

Go for the Tikka, you won't regret it. It's been said before, just buy the cheapest version. The actions are all the same (excellent) and dress it up the way you like. There are plenty of aftermarket choices available. Almost every chassis in the "chassislist topic" inlets for Tikka (well a lot of them do).

Here's my Tikka

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

The *only* weak points in the Tikka are the DBM and the Stock.

the Scout CTR would be my choice if you can get your hands on it, replace with a chassis to fix the above two issues and enjoy!

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

Please forgive me. I forget how much cheaper the Tikka T3's are for you guys.

Buy a T3 and pop it in a KRG. Justin's chassis is GTG and his back up even for me in the uk is top.

Re: CZ 750, SSG 04, or T3 sporter

I shot all 3 guns you mentioned. I would go with tikka sporter or buy a tikka varmint (as some proposed) and change the stock.
Tikkas are made on the same CNC machines and from exactly the same steel as Sako. I spoke to people who have been to Rihimaki and saw it their own eyes.
SSG 04- I happened to shoot this today in 308- great gun, but I would prefer 6,5x55/260 because of its external ballistics.
