I have been looking into getting a Maine Coon. Anyone have and if so what has been your experience with them?

My aunt and uncle had one when I was a kid. Sob was big, but nothing like the ones pictured above. It was also mean as hell and gave zero fucks about attacking whatever it wanted, including me a couple times.

Some of those Photoshopped pics are pretty funny. Anyways, it's pretty easy to spot the fakes. Them overly large house cats have a unique look to their faces. I guess you call it the maw or muzzle, but it looks puffy like it was stung by bees.

I grew up with a Maine Coon. Super relaxed cat, and he was big. Topped out at about 28 pounds, and could lay on a 3 foot coffee table and his tail hung off. As far as food consumption went he ate about a cup a day of dry food, supplemented with the occasional sparrow of ground squirrel. Litter box was oversized, but cleanup was standard to a normal house cat. Don’t remember much in the way of health issues/vet visits aside from the usual maintenance (shots and such).

Yeah, both of those cats are being held out away from the owner, like you would a fish or a big game kill. Not photoshop, just tricky photography to make it look like the cats are being cradled close to the owners' chests. Look at the pinky of the guy in black, holding up the cat's chest. He could only get it there holding his arm out. Big cats, but not Big Cats.

Get one, be a great pet. I have looked for one, pretty expensive from a breeder. I have a Maine Coon mix, neighbors cat, but lives half his life out of my garage, he sleeps here, they have kids and he is not impressed. He is a rumbler, always draining abscess's from his head, but he really likes me, and quite the buddy.
By the end of February, they are a mess if allowed outdoors, snow and water mats their thick fur bad, and also late winter, if they get close to your face, they are shedding and that hair sticks to your face something fierce, need a damp cloth.
I am no cat expert, but the cat in the top photo to me looks more like a Norwegian forest cat, which can be huge too.

They’re still a giant cat, a friend of mine had one about that big. Looked like a damn lion prowling the savannah when it strolled up to the couch.

My folks had a big Morris looking one, I'm not a cat person but He was a good dude, mellow as can be, regal demeanor. He was tall enough to stand on the floor and look across the kitchen counters standing on his hind legs, maybe 32-36 inches long.

Wife and I had one named Zoe. She was so small when we got her she fit in my shirt pocket. She grew out of that and was 28 pounds. Paws when stretched out were as big around as a beer can. Yes, she had claws. Base of her tail was as big around as my wife wrist. She was a dainty eater and on good food didnt shit too badly, less than the black tom we had at the same time.
Zoe and my wife bonded and my wife was her favorite. We lived in apartments at the time and when someone came to the door she would growl at the door loud enough to be heard through it. When my wife would open the door Zoe would take up station betweene her and the visitor and growl if she didnt like them. More than one person backed up. If she liked you she was loving and sweet.
She understood her size and weight and would avoid stepping on me or my wife when she would walk across the bed. Tried her damndest to be gentle but had a wild streak that would come out when she wanted to play with me. Only did that with me. I gave as good as I got too.
She lived to be 20 years old and developed lukemia, toughest day was when we put her down. Lost her and the black tom Symbad within a month of our daughter being born. Shit happens to us in droves then is smooth sailing for a while.
I would get another, but not from a normal breeder. I like my critters to be rescues, either from a rscue group or from someone that has one that isnt a "Show Quality" animal as I am more interested in the inherent pesonality and instinct than the looks.
Wow, my longest post.

One of my best friends aunt has/had 3 Maine Coon Cats. They are indeed large. Just as prone to that house cat belly though. Great cat. Another good friend of mine has a cat that is half Asian leopard, half west hyland (sp?) lynx. He paid $3k for it as a kitten. Fucking awesome cat. His markings are like tattoos. For his first 4 or 5 birthdays, they gave him goldfish; in the bathtub....... Savannah cats are cool too, but I think $15k is a stretch. My MIL wants a Norwegian mountain cat, those things are neat as hell too
