So I finally pulled the trigger on a nice knife after the move and I went with this. Daniel Winkler is also a vet and makes a lot of the edged hardware for doorkicker types so his stuff tends to be more on the utilitarian side. They look nice but they're meant to be used and abused. Steel is 80CRV2.
First knife I ever seen that you can literally dry shave with out of the box and I'm not talking about arm hair I'm talking beard hair. Unreal. Few different grip choices, I went with the G10 sculpted micarta for sheer strength and utility (and hey, it does look cool!) but some of the woods were really nice also. Attention to detail is astounding despite the simplicity. Good feel in the hand and the sculpted micarta and small thumb notch on the back of the blade lend to a very secure grip.
Simple and utilitarian, beautiful and balanced, not too big, not too small, razor sharp and that scabbard is something else too. No retention, it just "fits" kinda like a pistol would in an IWB holster. Fits snug and won't come out unless you pull it out. Pretty slick. They make different attachment hardware for it as well.
I'm sure I'll get a lifetime's use out of this knife.
And if you can make use of a tomahawk, man oh man does he make tomahawks, and I wouldn't be surprised if they could chop through 3/8" bolts either...
Whatever that spot is on the blade is caused by the flash I guess, it's a uniform dark gray color that the picture doesn't reflect well.
