So I'm looking into the savage hog hunter (among others), and want to make sure I understand my options correctly.

    I can either:
    a)deal with the blind mag
    B) have a new stock inletted for a CDI DBM (which mags does this work with?)
    C) have the new stock inletted for the factory DBM and use the inards to create a mag, and use savage mags.

Am I missing any other options?

A CDI inlet will work with Savage factory DBM, and all you'd need is a steel floor plate to throw on the bottom of the OE mag well/follower to have a mag to go with the DBM frame.

This seems like the route for me. $80 mags and a $200+ bottom metal on a budget gun don't seem to make much sense. Does savage (or anyone for that matter) make 10rd mags for the savage bottom metal?

Dark Eagle Custom makes 10rd magazines for Savage bottom metal, but they're more expensive than AICS 10rd 308 magazines.

By only $10...and you are saving inletting and $200+ for the bottom metal.

You'd need to get a stock inletted for DBM regardless of the type metal one chooses, though of course one can get a stock with factory DBM inlet from Choate, Manners, McMillan, Stockade, Boyds or even a Savage factory Accustock (which I've been fairly pleased with, and the varmint-style Accustock is $150 from Savage).

The factory top release DBM frame is a good value for $68, and Dan certainly makes a great magazine - its also nice the max OAL is 3.00", over a tenth longer than a traditional AICS mag.

Well if thats not a left handed swipe at Savage I don't know what is...it makes no sense at all...if ACCURACY is the benchmark and Savages are what does the price have to do with it other than allowing a man to shoot more, afford more scope, reload more or simply just be able to work on his own rifles without paying a smith $$$$ and spend time dreaming of shooting while waiting on his still sitting in the rack gun at the smithy's to be worked on...

I didn't read it as a swipe at all...simply a desire to keep an affordable build within budget.

Your absolutely probably right...I might have read it wrong...if I did I apologize...thought it might be more anti Savage gibberish...I take offense sometimes when I shouldnt...add CHEAP and Savage together in a sentence and my hackles stand on end...look at Savage MSRP and Remington MSRP...nearly identical nowadays...cheap is made in China, poor quality...

You must've misinterpreted what I was saying. Yes, I am looking for a budget precision/hunting rifle, and the HH is comprable to the rem. 700 AAC-SD but about $200 cheaper. Hence why I'm apprehensive to drop $210 on DBM, $60 for inletting, and $70 for a mag on something that is merely a convenience, and not a neccessity.

By the time you factor in CDI inletting, DBM, and a mag you have nearly doubled the price of the rifle (~$350)

The factory DBM option is slightly better (~$155 to inlet, ~$60 for the factory DBM, and $20 to complete the mag)

So $235 vs $350...on second thought I may just deal with the blind mag.

Gotcha...I did miss that one, didnt realize YOU were the OP... I need to drink more coffee before posting...my bad...anyway...just a heads up...CALL CDI...as if he has the Savage Factory DBM in-letting program...I'm about 100% sure he does...$60 for in-letting from CDI vs who ever was charging your $155...nothing wrong with Factory Savage DBM I just think the CDI and AICS mags are as nearly indestructible/bullet proof as they could be...if you keeping it as a stock HH and just want DBM I would advise to go with Factory DBM metal and mags...all day long...if you were using the HH as a base to build a precision gun CDI gets my vote...also check out PTG DBM for Savage as well...also look over at SSS Sharp Shooter Supply the Savage specialists...and you might consider joining Savage Shooters if you already haven't...

Thanks for the advice, I'll definitely check those links out.

I contacted CDI and he specifically said they don't have the data for the factory, which was a bummer. The $155 figure came from dark eagle ($125+ shipping both ways)

If I decide to stay stock, does anyone know the part number for a metal trigger guard? Not a huge fan of plastic...
