Has anyone else tried this yet? Boy that target doesn't want to stay still when shooting freehand, even with the use of a sling. Lots of fun though and definitely skills that I need to be improve.

Part of the reason this competition is set up the way it is. Not only to make it challenging, but to help all of us with the four shooting disciplines.

I know that I became to reliant on bench and prone shooting and felt there was a need to get back to the other disciplines of shooting that help round out a shooter and his/her skills.

Yes, it's not easy but the rewards are pretty good when we start to see our results improve as we go. I shot several rounds of this competition through trial while trying to come up with something just like this. Given the 4 position shooting and time limit on each discipline makes this a challenge.

Hope everyone will give it a try (or several), and I actually believe you'll start to see some good results as well as enjoying the challenge along the way.

freehand is pretty cool, did some steel smallbore silhoutte this year (targets between 42 and 109 yards and the size ranging betwwen a salt shaker and a tea cup saucer), it humbled me really quick. got hooked on it and so far my best score was only 15 hits on 40 targets.

did a practice course of fire from prone / bipod, 40 of 40 hits.

anyway, as joe said, this is going to be not only good training for rifle target shooting, but you'll see your freehand hunting skills improve also. had a blast with squirrels freehand this year. didn't feel the absolute need to lean against the tree to make a hit.

once we get the first scores going, we gotta get a learnings thread going like in the 100 and 200 comps, as there are going to be some cool things to figure out between standing, kneeling, ssitting and prone.

joe, is the kneeling going to be one knee, 2 knees, or shooter preference?

To be quite honest TP, I didn't know a two knee kneeling position existed. I was only ever taught the one knee position, which I'll admit is not my most comfortable position with my old legs and right ankle. I look like one of those little green army men setting on my heal these days rather then setting on the side of my foot which I was taught was the proper way. I'll get through it however, with the adjustments I've had to make.

What exactly is the two knee kneeling position? What is the angle of the rifle compared to the one knee position? Is a two knee position something that is used often these days, and popular?

i've seen two knees being used before, but it's more like a modified "sit" where your butt is actually resting on or more preferrably between the heels of the feet. it allows for more slouch in the posture and more of a cradling of the rifle.

the two thoughts were: 2 knee, more relaxed upper body, however lower body tend to cramp up after awhile. rifle is more supported by arms and cradled in the shoulder and across chest rather than resting on the inside of the knee like the traditional one knee. but the one knee also gives you the extra benefit of quickly getting up, like shooting from behind cover like a building clearing scenario.

either one works, i just thought you had a particular one in mind. i guess it would come down to at least doing one or the other, depending on comfort and as long as at least one knee is down.

looks like it might be a topic for a learnings thread, once a few matches are shot.

Why don't we just leave the kneeling position open for now, and allow either?

To require a person to contort their body into a position they may not be familiar with probably would not be fair to those that have practiced one kneeling position over the other. Which does raise the question if one has any advantage using one kneeling position over the other?

A bit on the egg shape side it appeared to me so I measured it on 75% view. East to West 3 13/16" - North to South 4"...

On the standard targets the 7 Ring is 3 7/8" (which is all that is countable on the 25 yard competition), while on the 50 yard Competition the 5 & 6 Ring is included with an overall target measurement 5 7/8"...

I really liked the link Joe, thanks for sharing. I feel a little steadier offhand with my left elbow in my ribcage though, at least when shooting a rimfire. Also my knees couldn't handle a both knee down shooting position, I prefer a one knee stand, but whatever works for anyone is fine by me. I was having more trouble finding the right position for sitting but I've been working it out at home and think I've got it dialed in.

The sling is a big help to me as well as getting my left elbow close in when shooting offhand, Steve.

I've not had great numbers shooting offhand but they're passable 5 shot group numbers that should improve the more we shoot this position. Keeping five shots in the black at 25 yards was the biggest challenge for me, but lately I've been able to do that on the TQ-3/5 top left bull (offhand bull), so I feel I've made some progress there.

I also found the training film to be very interesting and my setting position is different then what they show. I cross my ankles and rest my elbows on the inside of my knees. However, in the film it shows a different setting position - the one I learned in the Military. Over the years I have found that the cross ankle works better for me.

There's actually a lot to be learned from that WWII Training film, especially the sling usage.

Clodhopper, my guess is that you're in the same Artic blast of cold weather (perhaps worse) then I'm in right now?

The weather man is claiming mid to high 20's this weekend, it might be my only Decemeber chance to get out and post some 25 yard scores? Sure hope the weather man is right...

We are getting a bit of global warming here, with -20 on the thermometer this morning.
I have not yet purchased targets for the 25 and 50 yard matches, but plan to soon.

JOE, VERY COOL training clip.

do you think it would be ok to use the tq 3/5 at 50 as using the 5 targets with 5 shots each can get a bit pricey. it would probably be more convienant also using the 5 bull / 5 results on one paper, easier to score and compare. could shooters choice come into play?

if i put a shot off the rings on the 3/5 at 50 i'll just score it as a miss or "0".

If a person wanted to use the TQ-3/5 or the TQ-3/2 at 50 yards, they can. Just measure over on a shot out of the black (if using the TQ-3/5 at 50 yards) and see if it scores a 5 or 6, (then claim it), or it might truly be a flyer worth zero.

I'll use the TQ-3/2 at 50 yards for mine as I have plenty on hand and it's just a quicker scoring method for me.

Just so everyone knows, the TQ-3/5 is the 25 yard target and it does not have a 5 or 6 Ring. We only score from center X out to the 7 Ring for the 25 yard match.

Scoped rifles shouldn't experience much if any problems at these ranges, but the TQ-3/2 is sure handy for open and military type aperture sights.

My son and I made a quick trip out to the Range today to test some hi capacity (25 round) Butler Creek Steel Lips Banana Magazines from the offhand position. (They worked great by the way)

With all the snow out at the Range I'm not sure I'll be able to find a place to set up for the 25 & 50 yard December match?

However, don't count me out. I may take a shovel out with me tomorrow or Wednesday and clear myself an area - or I might just shoot from off the top of one of the picnic tables setting up near the firing line. I'm sure I can get prone on top the table and also get into the kneeling and setting position from the top of the table as well. That might be the better idea?

The weather was cold with a windchill of I'd guess around 12 to 15 degrees, (perhaps colder) when I shot this Match this morning. If the weather stays this way the rest of the month I'm not sure I'll shoot any further December Matches as there is about 10 inches of snow on our Range and lots of drifts. I did shoot the Prone Position (target bull's LLB & LRB - off the picnic table)... In any event at least I got this Match in. It's not that good of a score but I'll take it considering the conditions in which I shot. The games are on!

I need to develop my positional skills and have made much progress in my living room, although my wife does give me some strange looks. It's winter here and I don't know how much I'll be shooting but I'll make an effort when I can, other than that it's time to hit the reloading bench.

I like the idea of getting back to the fundamentals of the
4 Position shooting. I'll save the bench shooting for
the reasons you mentioned and for the SH 200 yard match.

Looking back on this morning's Artic outing, I
think I will still try and squeeze in another
trip to the Range this weekend for the 50Y-4P Match.

Heck, shooting in different weather conditions is
just as important as shooting the four disciplines.
May not always be the most comfortable weather
conditions, but getting 'er done does give a person
a feeling of satisfaction. So, I'll get back to the
Range Saturday afternoon or Sunday - regardless of
the weather.

Besides, I like to shoot!

You're right Joe, shooting in crappy weather is important too. I will get out there in January, lots of family obligations around the holidays that take priority right now though. Shooting is always fun, even when you're freezing your azz.

Will be making it to the range tomorrow. Today mr honeydo started to lay tile on the floor, thought everything was here to complete the job...results, four trips for supplies.
8PM the floor is all set in the mortar. The instructions say do not walk on tile for 24-36 hours, he he

Was frigid at the range today.
Started with new box of ammo unsighted rifle and bipod back home.
After some sighters determined to shoot for score anyway. Only practice in kneeling 5 shots today during sighters. Need to work on that kneeling.
Gave it a bit more elevation after shooting for score, looking for better score in 2010.

Joe thought you might be involved in casting with the muzzleloaders.
I cast for .45 auto, 9mm, .22 hornet, 7.62X39, M-1 Garand, .35 Whelen, (that's my huning rifle) recently trying to get paper patching to work in .260 rem.
Oh yeah .375 rb for wrist rocket and .490 rb for big game wrist rocket.

Yes, I've been doing the muzzle loading thing for close to 35 years now. I don't build them anymore as my eyesight ain't what it use to be for that kind of work, but I still shoot'em.

The Marlin seems to work good, wondering if it is the stock, most Rugers have that slick but pad.
I like to take them off and put on any old plastic pad that has some traction.

Well guys I did switch the wood stock out on the Ruger and installed the Fiberforce stock, still, with the Fiberforce stock I was able to post a 209 score on the earlier shot 25 yd 4-Position, so I'm not sure what happened this morning?

Just bad shooting on my part and perhaps not enough trigger time with this new stock on the Ruger and its Aperture Sights?

I didn't feel the 209 @ 25 yards was up to par and wrote that off to weather conditions, but at 50 yards the need to get some trigger time with this new set up really showed through.

The open sight results really didn't surprise me as I've shot open iron sights most my life (this goes back to my early
remark of 35 years of muzzle loading), so I have a good familiarity with the iron sights.

We'll see what happens in January when I go at it again. I would like to get a decent day at the Range to bench the Ruger first and get perhaps "rezeroed" with the TSR200 Aperture and the new stock before shooting for record.

I do agree about the new slick plastic butt plate on the new 10/22's. That truly is a piece of crap that little or no thought at all went into when going that route except maybe how much of a manufacturing cost it was going to save by going with a smooth plastic butt plate. Not a good move on Ruger's part IMHO.

Two additional thoughts. 1... I just noticed/realized that this morning I used the Federal 510B 40gr ammo instead of the Federal #745 36g hp ammo which I like so well. May have had something to do with my Aperture Sighted 10/22? 2... Most likely I just had a bad day...

Did some practice 25Y 4P shooting when at the range this week scores were better than this months official score.
I need to work out sight adjustments for 50 yards.
That "A" class 10-22 is my appleseed rifle, it does not know how to shoot at 50 yards.

Have been thinking about getting out tomorrow for a little range work. It's claimed it's suppose to be 26 degrees and sunshine by 1:00 PM???

I might play with the 10/22 Fiberforce stocked rifle at 25 & 50 yards and see what kind of results I get? If they do not improve from last month I may just put the wood stock back on the 10/22? In any event I won't turn in any 4-Position scores tomorrow, as I need to work this stock thing out.

Clodhopper, do you attend many of the Appleseed shoots? I see the closest to me is in April 2010 up near around Custer State Park, South Dakota. I thought I might take my son up there and we might have a go at it if money isn't to tight?

I'm an appleseed instructor, cleverly hiding on that website as clodhopper..
Go to an appleseed if you can make it. There is not a lot of new stuff for anyone who has had marksmanship training.
But be prepared to get drilled on basics.
Some guys like me are to smart to learn anything, so I had to go to several appleseeds to get it drilled through my thick skull.
Shooters there are fasinated by the history of 4-19-1775 told during much needed breaks.

You are to be commended for becoming an Appleseed Instructor, Clodhopper. Well done my friend!

I feel my son could gain from an instructional block or two at one of these events (me as well) as I feel young people and older folks as well come away with more knowledge and shooting mechanics when it is presented by someone who is not known to them.

This is not to say that my son doesn't possess good firearm safety and marksmanship skills and shooting mechanics, I feel he does.

However, this is looking through my eyes and sometimes as a parent we tend to see what we want to see, and not what we should be seeing. This I believe holds true to a good degree of many parents, including myself even though I am a Nebraska Hunter Education Instructor. So yes, if possible we will attend an Appleseed event.

thanks, if you like that format i'll keep it up for the rest of the year, unless you want to, i don't want to step on your toes.

i was going to list the seperate position results, but once i looked at it, it looked a bit "cluttered". since the seperate positions are already listed, anyone that wanted to compare can just look back for comparison with others, or even to chart their own progress.

usually what i do at the end of the month is copy and paste my own scores into an excel spreadsheet and a word document, and see where i need to improve and where i have improved.

the biggest thing i like about the short range comps is to see how good the SHOOTER is to put lead on target, once you strip away the bench, bipods, bags, and all the other mechanicals. it's also good practice for my smallbore silhoutte shoots.

joe, maybe you should start a learnings thread for the short range comps, once again i don't want to step on your toes by starting one, but i believe there will be more to learn from this comp than the long range one, and by keeping comments in a seperate thread would keep the looking at the scoring / pictures clearer and easier to decipher.

i was thinking maybe we should rename these comps "SH rimfire short range competition", and "SH rimfire long range competition". or something along those lines.

a nice thing about the learnings threads is not only what the participating shooters learn from each other, but is a great place to direct NEWBIE questions on shooting rimfires and also a great place to research equipment and ammo on how they actually perform. looking at smallboresnipers scores with the .17, i'm getting more attracted to that caliber.

No, I don't mind if you don't mind keeping that format and posting the monthly results. It's an excellent format.

I believe you mentioned something to the nature in an earlier post of; if a person wants to dig deeper into the monthly results to see what equipment and ammo was used by the competitors - they can go back into that month's thread to have a look see.

I think a learning thread for the short range comps is a good idea, and I also like the idea of renaming them.

I wonder if the moderators would allow us a lock down sticky for short range and long range posting of the rules and matches for our SH Rimfire Comps?

I further wonder if we would be allowed an open sticky for the learning thread's of each?

that first one is definately the one of the styles we were using. thanks for the link, i gotta browse it a little more and see if i can pull off some targets we use in the 100 and 200 yarders.

edit: took a peek, will see what the others think as i see the 100 and 200 yarders there. i also like the silhoutte ones.

2nd edit: just printed a few off and bumped them against what we're using, they are slightly off. some of the bull's are bigger, some smaller from what we're shooting now, but it is up to the rest of the shooter's to see if they would make a good free "standard target"
