Seems like any morning I head to the archery range before work there are deer grazing on the practice range. Today I got the bright idea of putting the iphone up to the range finder and bingo.... the range finder app!

Now if only the bucks were this tame, and it wasn't a public park, and it was the proper season, and I had the right tags, but alas, no. I did mange to get within 24 yards of them before the decided to wander off but I couldn't get the camera/finder lined up fast enough for a pic.

I dunno, I've never been deer hunting (maybe some day) but they do have the same white butt/black tail arrangement as the deer that hang out by my parents place (which is 120 miles north east of the range) and look like this:

Funny how they stand just like the 3D archery targets. Range to this guy was 20' or so. They're so tame up there that my mom can call them in, they know her voice and that she has treats for them.

Re: deer on the range

I've had the same thing happen to me a few years back when two deer lined up right in front of the target I was shooting at from 300 yards away. I had stopped to take a break and reload when they wandered out of the woods onto the range to feed. Scoped them but did not shoot, not in season. Just stood up and yelled and they got the message. This year it was turkeys all over the range.

Re: deer on the range

That's pretty cool. We have deer all around the place where I work - they're like cows up here. I keep saying all I need is a little darkness and a baseball bat and I wouldn't even need a gun to stock the freezer - but alas, it's state property. No hunting in town, either

Not to hijack, but you want to be careful with sticking pictures up on the internet with those iPhones. I was uneducated on this topic until fairly recently. With the click of a button after looking at your picture, I was here:

Doh! Well at least now everyone knows I wasn't lying about being at the archery range!

Can you try it again? I've modified my sizing script to strip the EXIF data from the photos so I shouldn't make such a goof again with the iphone.

Re: deer on the range

I had a few walk out on me one day while I was shooting. Been shooting for half an hour when I noticed 3 bucks at the 345 mark just grazing and eating away. They were in velvet not to big but weird how they will come out in Sep. like that but come Nov. they are nowhere to be found.

you are absolutely right. The buck is a blacktail or Muley (or a whitetail muley hybrid based on the antlers) but the OP contain whitetails.

Re: deer on the range

there was a bunch of guys at my local range last year shooting when a doe walked right out on top of the gravel stop right behind the targets. we were all shooting at the 100 yard mark and she just mosied on out and took her good 'ol time . everyone stopped and looked at eachother with a dumbfounded look. ive never seen that happen before. once we got over the shock, i know i was thinking the same thing everyone else was though....haha
