Defiance finish

Traded for a build that has a deviant hunter action, amazing action and my first custom build. The stainless finish is not my thing though. I had read about cerakote being a no go On these actions because of tight tolerances.
I don’t think exterior would be a problem and I really don’t care about the interior being coated but I would like the fluted bolt/handle to be black.

Is it just the action? If so, would you consider sending back to Defiance and get them to Nitride it?
Or just send the bolt?
When I built my 300WM, I didn't Cerakote the inside of the action or the bolt body, just the handle and shroud, just in case I was to go too "heavy" on the paint.
You could use Elite Cerakote on just the bolt, but make sure the applicator does not apply it too heavy.

The bolt is chrome moly and they can corrode. Nitride coating is commonly used on defiance actions. Just saying.

Look into DLC. It’s much thinner than a cerakote finish, much slicker, and more uniform. It’s a chromoly bolt, so you could probably blue it as well.

Send it back to Defiance and have them Nitride it. Simple and done.

No, barrel would need to be removed.

Defiance could send it in for Nitride or you can send it to H&M. Defiance stopped offering the DLC for various reasons.

It's a shame that Defiance stopped offering DLC as an option, I can't remember the reasons why. My .300NM Defiance came from them with polished rails and a DLC finish, and it's a hell of a nice action. I'm a big fan of DLC.

I would personally send it to Defiance and have them nitride the bolt. My friend's .300NM rifle is a Defiance with a nitrided bolt, and it's a really nice setup itself. With nitriding, I think it's important to go through the OEM, in this case Defiance, as the process can materially alter the steel if not done in a manner that's spec'ed for the steel material. Going through Defiance should avoid having those issues.

I would Cerakote the action and have the bolt parkerized. And then you can Cerakote the bolt handle. That's what's done on one of my Deviants and it's the smoothest of all my actions including one that's Cerakoted and another that's nitrided. Parkerizing on the bolt is great because it's porous and holds oil.
