Just bought my first pvs 14 to get in to the might vision game. It came with a demist shield and the manual says, I have to put it on everytime I am using the monocular. Seems a bit cumbersom. Can someone share some knowledge on what this demost shield is for? Is it a must to put on everytime? Or can I put it there and never take it off ?… or Can I operate the device without demist shield without major negative consequences?
Thanks for your time and attention.

“The PVS-14 Demist Shield snaps onto the eye piece of the unit to prevent condensation from forming on the optics during rapid temperature changes, heavy and/or long use. This low cost lens is cheap insurance to keep your PVS-14 operational. We recommend this accessory for anyone operating in constantly humid or maritime environments as well as those in desert locations where the temperature can change dramatically between dusk and dawn.”

Can I keep it on without removing it ?

The demist shield is not a necessity, you can try it an see what you think. I'm with GreenMushroom on this one.

1. TNVC sells some pretty good anti-fog paste called "catcrap" (the name sucks but it works pretty good).

2. I recommend you do not store your 14 in areas where it is really cold if you can (my gun safe sits in a warmer room with a dehumidifier in it). If you live in a humid area and plan to go outside you will experience condensation on the lenses if your PVS-14 is colder than the outside environment (I live in Louisiana).

3. Don't use your "booger hooks" aka fingers to wipe off your lenses. Dirt on your fingers can scratch the protective coatings on the lenses. I would recommend using something like a good professional camera lens cleaning kit. Be very gentle, try to blow off any loose dust or junk first.

4. Use quality batteries and do not store the 14 with the batteries in it.

5. Have fun!

Everything written below is good advise. You should also get a shield for the focal lens. Get a few spare rubber covers for it also. You can play around with a hole and size it to increase the depth of focus by changing the "F" stop like in a camera. Use a Dremel grinder with a coarse wheel to keep the hole smooth. A smaller than normal hole can be very useful during full moons / higher ambient light conditions. Use a clean lens brush to field clean the PVS lens. Use Energizer batteries, never Duracell. They have a much greater chance of leaking. I've use their lithium batteries with no problems but still keep them out when not in use.
One last thing is Surefire batteries are very good. You can save a lot of money and get Panasonic CR123's when needed for other uses such as Eotech sights. Surefire batteries are made by Panasonic.
