I am going to dura-coat my Surgeon and am wanting to do it in desert camo. If some of you wouldn't mind, could you post some pic's of your desert camo'd rifles and let me know which colors your used. I have done a lot of rifles in dura-coat, but this will be my first in desert. Thanks for the help in advance.

Re: Desert color scheme help

Here's my .243WSSM with my own version of a desert color Multicam pattern done in air cure Cerakote though.

Started with a base coat of Desert Sand
Finished with blends and solids of...
Federal Brown
Coyote Tan
FDE
Hidden White
OD Green (NOT MUCH)
Foliage Green (NOT MUCH)

Re: Desert color scheme help

I only had one problem with the finish on my rifle...and it was MY fault...not the cerakote's fault.

I tossed a spare bipod in my drag bag and it scratched the piss out of the barrel. Only through the camo, and no where near deep enough to expose metal...but under normal field use, it's been flawless.

I haven't tried the bake on Duracoat yet, but my experience with the air cure Duracoat was bad enough that I'll stick with Cerakote from now on. Don't fix what ain't broke.
I'm planning to build an oven this summer to try the bake on Cerakote in the future.

Re: Desert color scheme help

What problems have you had with Dura-coat? And do you believe that the Cerakote is a superior product? I have done 3 rifles so far with Dura-coat and 2 handguns. The handguns have not faired so well, but the rifles have done ok so far. I would really like to try the air cure Cerakote, just wanting to make sure it's worth the extra $20 per color. I would love to use the bake on, but I have no access to a oven.

I DO believe Cerakote is a superior product, but let me clarify.

Air cure Cerakote vs Air cure Durakote = Cerakote Superior

I have not used bake on of either one, but all my research points to Cerakote winning that "battle" as well.

The problems I had are that the Air Cure Duracoat is something you have to mix. (Cerakote you don't) That part alone is a huge turn off.
The Duracoat finish I put on my 10/22 barrel and receiver had abrasion marks on it, and chipped by the receiver in less than a year. I was just not impressed and if I was planning to keep it...I would blast it down again and re-do it in Cerakote.

I'm not sure how long Duracoat will last after you mix it...but I've had Cerakote bottles open for almost 2 years now and as long as you take care of it (I keep it in the fridge after its open) it should last plenty long to save or use to touch up scratches, provided you ever get any.

Re: Desert color scheme help

VJJ, I like the looks of your desert camo, "old school". Decider I'm looking it up now. C Bass, thank you for taking the time to explain. I'm really leaning towards doing this rifle in Cerakote. I would only be able to do 3 colors, but if it lasts longer I think I would be happier.

Re: Desert color scheme help

You guys are freakin great, I really appreciate you taking the time to help me, I know you have better shit to do. Decider, you will have to excuse my saying, while I spent over 8 years doing precision work in the batt's, I started in heavy weapons. That was the first thing a platoon sgt told me in my first real engagement. It's alway's stuck in my mind for some reason.
