Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

I'm looking into purchasing a SRS in 300WM.
I did a custom google search on it and there really isn't much to read on them except threads from 2008-09. DId they ever catch on? It looks like a neat concept. I like the 12lb weight for a 300WM, but I'm just wondering how the felt recoil would be? Does anyone here own one or know anything about them as far as accuracy goes? It looks like they are very accurate from what I have read.
I just haven't heard much about them in the last year or so. I figured there would be a lot more information out on them by now.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

Where is the best place to buy one from?
I see of few for sale on gunbroker, but I haven't seen a .300WM yet?
I wish there was one locally I could play with before I drop $5k on a rifle I know nothing about. I've never been a bullpup fan, but this concept looks very interesting.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

oubeta..I am not sure but you could call DTA after SHOT and see who is the closest customer on record? I bought mine straight from DTA and shipped it to my FFL on the first 100 released. I traded for the second one. They gave my phone number to someone local to me to look at one so maybe there is an OKC or Tulsa owner near you. I am a bit too far away to make it easy for either of us.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

I love mine - got it from George Talia @ Gunslingers. Price was right and service was perfect. I'll probably go to Bobby for extra caliber conversions (unless DTA starts selling them).

Great design, and great ergonomics. I also love that I need only one good scope for several calibers I use. Must add that in general I'm partial to bullpups.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

I got mine from bobby at freedom gunworks as well. He was very helpful answering all my questions and shipped the weapon out immediately. i got it in two day. and have been shooting it atleast twice a week. I put a nightforce scope on her and its a tack driver. I have the 338 lapua mag and the 308. Ive been thinking about calling bobby to have a custom 6.5- 284 barrel made. youll love the gun

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

I really enjoy shooting mine. I just had APA spin me up a 308 conversion with a rock creek barrel. I am finally happy with a rifle. It is my first real shooter after going through 10 or so guns over the course of the last 3 years. It has confirmed that while my technique is bad, it is not as bad as my groups would suggest. I can finally say that I have a sub .5moa gun.
I am going to have a super light contour 23" 338LM conversion made for it for an Elk hunting trip I hope to make next year.

You should buy one.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

+1 for George at Michigan Gunslingers, bought mine with 308 and 300 wm conversions and could not be happier with his service, instant communication with email and phone.

If you ever make it down to NE Texas you can try mine out.

Becareful, Bobby from Freedom is not welcome on this forum.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

One more thing-
I would buy the DTA chassis and then have a good smith (like APA) make you the conversion. DTA won't mind, b/c you'll still have to buy the bolt, mag, and extension from them (and at the prices they are charging for those items, I imagine that there is some pretty good profit there). It is my (very limited) experience that you will get the best shooting rifle this way. Not that the DTA/krieger barrels aren't good, I just think that with APA cutting the chamber, etc, you have a better chance of getting a shooter than when you buy the "production" conversion from DTA.

Plus, you get to have the fun of having a custom doohickey made.

Well whatever. I have no intention of getting wrapped up in the politics surrounding this forum or any other. Bobby treated me right throughout the entire process with my DTA. That's a fact and that's where it ends for me.

DTA uses bobby for their custom conversions according to the gentleman I talked to a couple days ago at DTA. He must be doing something right.

+1

This would be my approach as well.

Been there done that with the factory barrels.

Hope this helps,

I think that (a) APA makes the barrels for Bobby, and (b) they prefer individual customers to go through Bobby. In any case, they speak to individuals - so if one must get his barrel directly from APA, it was my understanding that it could be arranged.

Doesn't really matter to me much. I like products that work, regardless of their origin. Thus far, freedom has served me well. I'll leave the axe grinding to those with the motive to do so.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

Jon Beanland has offered to bring one up and let me fondle it and see how I like it before i order one.
Thanks Jon!
It looks like a really neat platform. I will surely consider having my smith barrel it. I'm torn between an AICS chassis system and the DTA for my .300WM build.
The think I really like about this is the weight. 12lbs is crazy light for a .300WM. I just wonder how the felt recoil will be even with a good brake??

On my SRS - felt recoil of 338LM with a native brake was OK. I figure that 300WM just can't feel worse

. In my hands SRS feels better than AICS. Both are nice.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

I guess with me being kinda new to this site I havent had to inside knowledge of any wrong doings from Bobby. All I know is that Ethan from DTA told me only to talk to bobby and I got my rifle completely loaded to the hilt within 2 days.

Re: Desert Tactical Stealth Recon

The DTA brake is efficient enough that it shouldn't be uncomfortable. I shot it in the .338 LM configuration and once I knew what to expect (after the 1st round), it was quite tolerable enough to make me wish I had another 20 rounds, and I'm a recoil wuss.

If you run it with a brake or suppressor, it should slow down the recoil impulse enough to make it quite comfortable. The ergonomics of the stock were good for me so that's another plus when shooting something that has an abrupt recoil impulse like the Win Mag.

Accuracy won't be an issue of the rifle.

I don't own one or I'd let you test drive it.

I am going to be in San Antonio for most of the next 30 days. You are welcome to come and shoot if you want to make the drive.
