Hey Guys,

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has caught the "new-gen" tripod shooting bug using Arca Swiss plates as a direct connect between the rifle and a leveling base. Already sidelined my old Manfrotto 190XPROB with a saddle to gear up for a new setup. Seems like the key to all of this is the RRS leveling bases; will likely grab one of those.

My question is then regarding the tripod. While I would love to be able to swing for a RRS, or even a Feisol Tripod I just don't think it is in the cards for me. While looking around for some reasonable alternatives that were lightweight and yet had high 30+ max load capacities I came across "Desmond Tripods".

One model that has caught my eye as something I could actually pack with is the Desmond 428: 3lb, carbon fiber, 4 section, reported 44lb load capacity while all being $170 shipped. Anyone have any experience with these lines of tripods. Is it too good to be true?

Best,
Brian

I've had a Desmond 432 for a couple of years now. I use it for night time coyote hunting with a 22" AR/ thermal setup. This model had a 55# rating and works great. I've been very happy with it for the money.

That is great to hear! Did you find there to be any issues with the durability of the rubber feet or locks?

Also what kind of concerns me is that since it is an inverted folding design would a wide tripod head like a leveling base prevent it from folding all the way?

I run a leveling base in mine with no issues. I'll fold mine up tonight and take some measurements to let you know what you can get away with. On a side note, I run mine with the leveling base on the center column as it's easier and quicker to adjust the height in the field. Obviously it's not as solid using it this way but well worth the trade off in my opinion. I'm not trying to shoot tiny groups or 1000 yards.

Desmond tripods are great for the money! To me there was a noticeable amount of stability difference between this and the RRS, but I think it comes pretty close considering the amount you pay for it. It's definitely a step above the old Manfrotto / HOG saddle combo.

If you don't mind that would be much appreciated. What leveling base do you run? Also when you say center column you are talking about the optional "long" column that comes with correct?

Sorry it took a couple days to get the measurements, got a lot going on right now. Anyway, here's a couple pics that may help. By the way, I never fold the legs backwards for transporting. It'll fold up " tighter" by just collapsing the legs together and the added length doesn't bother me.

photo72457.jpg Found this Induro Carbon fiber CT-204. I think it's a 8 wrap, four section. It's not as heavy duty as the Feisol or then RRS but I am amazed at how sturdy it is. I can't wait to get a palt for my .22 trainer. I'll be able get my 3 year old twins out and behind it safely.

Ah fantastic thanks for those photos and tip; all sold! I bought a Desmond 428, can't wait to check it out. How do you like your leofoto leveling base?

That base does everything I need it to at a great price. It's liquid filled and has had no issues holding my rifle or spotting scope still. I know that there are better options out there but this is hard to beat for the money. Personally, the only place I think I'd spend more money is the clamp/ plate. My cheap clamp doesn't " lock down" on my cheap plate. The plate will slide in the clamp if I bear down on it, at least until it hits the stop. I may end up with the RRS clamp before it's all over but this setup is working fine for now.

Good luck,
Steve.
