difference between bartlein and ER shaw

this might be a newb question or previously discussed.... however how much of a difference will there be in a baretlein or ER Shaw barrel... its going on a win model 70 and its going to be a 300 win...sitting in a mcmillian a4.... intended use will be long range hunting and shooting.... from what i can gather on here the only difference is lead time.... is that the case or am i wayyyy off?

Generally speaking, Bartlein barrels are considered top tier barrels and ER Shaw are high mid grade.
Bugholes as 30 cal Bartlein blanks in stock so the lead time shouldn't be a factor. If the choice was mine I would hands down go with Bartlein

I'd just as soon use a factory barrel as a Shaw. They are in a completely different class from bartlein, Krieger, obermayer, brux, Schneider, rock etc.

so out of that list who would take the top spot??? or is the difference so minimal its down to opinions at that level

Out of those listed, they are in the same class. Most people will tell you to get which ever of those has the least amount of wait time for your application.
That being said, my top choices would be 1. Bartlein 2. Broughton, 3. Krieger and so on.
I personally just had a Rock installed it had to have it replaced with a Broughton due to the bore not be being drilled correctly. From what i've been told they are great when they're great but tend to be hit or miss.

now the other age old question would be, would a muzzlebreak effect the barrel for accuracy??

What brakes are you looking at? I put a PWS precision rifle brake on my 300 and was amazed at how soft it was.

my buddy got a ER 260... shoots .6... i have some ER 223w for ARs' that shoot .5

In answer to both your questions I was lucky enough to get a Bartlien barrel (thanks Sean @ Mile High) on my new AIAW. The barrel is amazing. I am still breaking it in and my last 5 5 shot group target had 3 groups 0.2" the other 2 (my fault)brought the aggregate to just over 0.3". The muzzle break on the rifle seems to have no effect on accuracy. When I first got my TRG 22 it had no muzzle break. Groups size did not change when I installed the muzzle break.

very soft to the shooter, pretty aggressive to your neighbors but no one got up and left so its certainly tolerable

after looking more into it... the breaks they offer would be poerfect for the simple fact that im going with a m24 contour and the crown is .90.....thanks for the heads up

Well, That's the rock that was bored out of center. It could only manage about 3/4 MOA so it went back to have a Broughton installed.
It's guaranteed to shoot 1/4 not that I'm nearly that good. But my smith warned me that the he had issues machining the barrel before it was delivered. But because I sent him the blank that was on me. He generally only uses Broughton in the top of the line sticks and Shilen select match as standard.
I should have it back next week for an updated range report.

In response to the previous post....I'm not trying to troll your post but I have experience with 31 rock barrels and they have all been perfect hammers! I have dealt with 28 duty rifles with rock barrels and three personal rifles that I own with rock barrels. Every single one will shoot exceptional groups.

I know that number is statistically not significant, however other than a builder how many people have personal experience with that many rifles built the same way? To the OP I apologize for getting the thread off track.

Like I originally stated, Rock's have a reputation to be superior barrels, which is why I bought one. I may have just had some bad luck with it. I am certainly no expert, however this barrel didn't perform. I trust the smith, as he stated that there were issues from the start. I made the decision to stick with it. Fortunately the new barrel is being installed at no charge as STS stands by the products it sends out.

well... ill say this...i am just trying to get a .5 MOA 300 WIN....any groups better than that, would be a plus... but im guessing a winchester model 70 in 300 win with a bartlein m24, intalled by bartlein would be all of .5 MOA if not better....

Unless you can do all your own work, you are going to pay some coin to have a smith do it for you. Do you want it to shoot "ok", or do you want something that will allow you to improve as a shooter and not second guess your equipment?

I had to save a little more, I had to wait a little longer, but I got a Bartlein. I have never second guessed that decision.

ETA: Realize as well, you could have this barrel for many, many thousand rounds. When your accuracy degrades due to barrel wear, if you aren't changing calibers, have the smith cut it back a few inches and re mount it. You now have another life from your top of the line barrel.

shaw is located about 10min from my house. Their barrels are lacking to say the least. and their customer service has been shitty. Twice they fucked up my buddys barrel, and twice they didnt make it right. To even mention their name in the same sentence as Bartlein, Broughton, Kreiger, Shilen, Brux etc is a sin.

I too am a big fan of Bartlein barrels. Their finsh inside and out is superior to any other barrel I've ever worked on.

I have three E.R. Shaw barrels on Ar's (16", 20", 24"). All shoot .5-.7 moa with my bad eyes. Can't say about bigger or bolts, but for AR's they are a deal!

might put a Shaw on a Stevens 200 budget build but wouldn't put one on my AAC when i get the funds to re barrel.
