Difference between the AE and AW rifles.........

.........other than the AE is offered in .308 only?

Is one as accurate as the other?

Can AE rifles be upgraded to AW?

AEs can be very accurate. Both of mine are half moa or better with factory match ammo (FGMM). They are not upgradable to AWs. AEs come in two flavors: mk1 and mk2. For your purposes the differences between the Mk1s and 2s are the mk1s limited to 5 round magazines mk2s can take 10rnd AICS mags.

AWs are similar to AEs in function but use different magazines, have a 3 position safety (safe and bolt locked, safe, and fire positions), and the action is permanently bonded to the stock.

I have the AW, can not comment on AE. I shot out to 1000 no problems. we shoot clay birds at 500 meters(550 yards) very accurate

The big difference based on what I have (AW) is the magazine and action. The AW mags are dual feed. I love the way they feed, in that especially with last round, they feed flawlessly. The other big thing with the dual stack magazine with the AW is that you can top load them even while in action without having to drop the magazine like the ACIS mags the AW uses.

Lastly, bolt is different with a three way safety. There seems to be more machining steps involved also in the production of the AW compared to the AE. The triggers are the same based on the feel and adjustment features from what I can tell.

I'm not sure you would notice much difference in accuracy between the two. The AE is a fine rifle, but not built as robust as the AW. As other have mentioned there are some feature differences between the two rifles that may or may not be a big deal to you.

One thing that is nice about the AW is that you can easily swap barrels yourself if you buy the proper tools. There is a Youtube video showing a barrel change at the range and it take all of about 6 minutes.

I watched the video (over at TacPro I think) that showed all the disassembly and reassembly and having essentially the same POI. Very impressive, especially when he swapped barrels.

They are very expensive pieces of equipment but I guess when you've bought the AW then you're through.

So the AW series offers two different action sizes with the long action serving for .300WM and .338 Lapua Mag and short for .243 and .308. Are these the only choices per action?

A good smith can twist you up barrels in whatever caliber you like.

Noone mentioned triggers, is the AE a 2 stage beautiful trigger like the AW's??

The AE is a 2-stage like the AW. Haven't shot an AW to compare, but both of my AEs (mkI and mkII) have ok triggers and I'd guess they are the same as in an AW. Although I do prefer a single stage at about 1.5lbs to it, fwiw...

Donot buy just because of price , Buy once , buy right , If you Really want a AW , Donot get a AE , and then sell it and buy what you should have to start with .

I would reccomend the AW , they are the business , the 10rd mag is fantastic , and the rounds feed from It so smooth that the Manual tells you that most people , beleive that it has NOT feed a round into the chamber , and they open and inspect , Only to find It has feed the round into the chamber as it was designed to do .

This is a Waaaaaaaaayyyyyyy in the future purchase for me. But the Jarhead in me has to have a plan and some plan is better than no plan.

I'm currently running a Savage 12 that I'm trying to get to shoot like I think it should. I've bought a new precision ground lug from Jim at NSS and am going to reset the headspace. I feel that the rifle should be a solid .7 MOA shooter. If I have this success with the factory barrel, them my next move it is to get a can. If not, rebarrel and then get the can. Then the saving and waiting begins.

I'm probably going to buy one of these awesome rigs that comes up regularly on the boards. Whether it's a GAP or a M40A1'ish rifle, sometimes a TRG..............truly some fabulous deals come across the boards for someone that has the cash but not enough for a AW. This will allow me to go to the next level but be able to sell when I've got the rest of the jack saved up.

Or...........I might just buy a 5R and set it in a AICS chassis and shoot that until I have enough saved. That way I'll be comfortable with the ergonomics of the stock.

One more question about the AE. Can the barrels on these be as readily changed out as the AW?

This happens to me all the time! I think it did not feed and open bolt to check and sure enough there it is. The feeding is so smooth it is freaky..

I noticed this as well when I took my new AW out this past weekend. I opened the action twice to make sure the bullet had feed and both times it was there.

I sold my HK SR9TC many years ago to get some of the cash for my AWP, never regretted it. I've gotten tired of cleaning semi auto's as the years have passed.

I have had quite a few AW rifle and still currently have them. They are all very good and continue to perform very well. I just recently got an AE and from what I can tell there is no diffrence in accuracy verses the AW. Feeding is the same bolt manipulation is the same mag changes are the same etc. I actually like the AE better for some of the things it offers like the PRICE for one. I guess since I have had AI rifles for the last 5-6 years I dont really care anymore if its an AE or AW they will both serve you very well. The one thing that is irritating is that you cannot get some of the accesories on the AE or AICS that you can with the AW series.

When I talked to Stacey last year I had asked him the same question, AE MkII or AW. At 60 and for my use he said, the Mark II will do everything for me and then some. When you get old, sometimes you listen to those that know more that you do. Took me a long time to learn that, ok, I'm still learning.

Honestly there is no one correct answer for all. Some can and might make use of teh advantages the "AW" series offers over the "AE". However, most do not and therefore the "AE" is a very good either entry or starting point. As for the accessories and/or options not "CURRENTLY" offered on the "AE" or "AICS" in comparision to thje "AW" series, you just have to pick something out to complain about RICH, but we are listening.
