Via word of mouth a local shooter got my name.....he is having trouble with the powder section of his 550B - ONLY used for 45acp. He moved, then set up his unit in the new house, now things are not functioning. First he started damaging necks - but tightened down the base (unit does not have the "strong"?? base/setup) and that seemed to take care of that.

Now the powder system seems to be sticking - he can't seem to get a reliable flow/feed out of the system. He felt is was "sticky".

He is a novice and had the unit setup by a guru. I have ZERO experience with Dillon presses.

Any ideas? Any one have some guidance on where to start. He did call Dillon, but they spoke way above his head, he stated.

I have not seen the setup yet, but was trying to prep myself for tomorrows visit with him.

Thanks

Re: Dillon 550B Help

I know he called Dillon, but call them while you're there and have the schematic in hand so they can identify parts to you.

The damaged necks and then powder issues seem to both point to the powder die and thrower station.

Re: Dillon 550B Help

There are several things your bud may have done wrong in setting up his 550. A review of the literature that comes with it and associated accessories, like the powder dispenser, is in order. The Dillon people are human and he may have spoken to one having a bad day: but they are the last word when you have questions.

There simply isn't enough info in the OP to solve the problems.

Re: Dillon 550B Help

I agree with y'all. Sorry for the lack of info, he was trying to explain what he did and didn't do, but it was like " that little adjuster I tweeked it one way, then thought there was a piece stuck....." etc

I am pretty sure he doesn't have things aligned properly.....

I plan to look at it tomorrow with him and I will have him call Dillon while I am there if I can't get er to go.

Beyond that - Thank you for the posts!! I was taking a stab in the dark if others had a trick to that stations setup/trouble shooting.

Re: Dillon 550B Help

I can't think of anything out of alignment that would cause his problem.

If the powder bar is sticking, it may just have to be taken apart and cleaned.

If it's not, and he's getting erratic charges, it could be from static electricity and he should put on a ground wire.

Re: Dillon 550B Help

Well, everyone is kinda right. Took the top apart, cleaned everything, then reset the dies, powder drop...etc. He had some parts incorrectly installed or not tightened properly, but overall it wasn't too bad

Not buttery smooth in the end, but definately working pretty good.

Thanks again y'all.
