I went from dish over to direct tv. I have to agree they all suck. If you have to go with either, choose the cheapest option.

I had Dish for 7 years prior, but have had DirecTV for the past four years.
I liked Dish just fine and their customer service was good on each of the four DVR's they replaced for me.
I have not need DirecTV to replace anything but some band coverters, which I installed myself.
Overall, I like DirecTV's features and programming better, so I am sticking with them.

What was wrong with the Dish? I realize they are both bad to deal with but what about picture quality in HD? Dish will save me about $460 over Direct TV in the nest 2 years. And when I told Direct that I was going to cancel they quickly came up with a competitive price. It is a choice between two evils.

I have had directv since I moved out on my own. After almost 12 years of having direct I can honestly say it is one of the best services I have ever paid for. Never had a single problem, never wanted to switch carriers, and barring some kinda stupid shit, I will always be a directv customer.

I currently have Dish and switched from Direct because the customer service folks ticked me off.
Technically, I don't know if there is any difference, but customer service wise; it's all in favor of Dish for this geezer.

Nothing. When I bought a HD system four years ago, Dish told me that it would take them about 60 days to get to me to do the equipment upgrades.
I found that to be unacceptable, so I gave DirecTV a shot.

2. DirecTV2PC - Streams previously recorded programming to my computer via my home network.

They are also now offering 3D programming, but I don't have a TV for that yet.

Had Dish in Alaska, absolute hated it as it lost signal strength more times than it worked. Many calls to customer service changing transponders did little even did dish alignments, just could not get a signal through the weather. Their fix, we call a local service repair to come out on our coin....Dish would not pay for service calls. Our neighbors signed up just after we did as we got a discount for signing them up, same thing. Asked in the neighborhood all with same results. All football season, sit down with a bag of Thunder chips and drink, kick off and no signal the rest of the day flicking in out and out, get to see a few plays, nothing for long spans of time. I am not exaggerating, it was that bad. Even when the wind blew it would lose signal.
What also irritated me was the only time we got a credit was when the transponder went down. Their billing system was terrible too as they did not have local payment center, either use CC by phone and get charged a fee to use CC or send it in by mail and have a late payment due to weather causing it got us into many arguments. We had to have it for year due to the cheap plan we got but day after, cancel and will never again.
Had cable service and every time something caused a signal lost, we got a credit for the time it was down. A phone call to someone who was actually in Alaska saying we lost service, they would credit us for the day.

Both Dish and Direct use the Alaska Auger where you pay more for less. With all the programming in the sky it takes about one weekend to run out of new programming. Been thinking about FTA as I'm tired of paying for junk. Have also replaced 3 dish receivers. Judging from previous comments I think they rotate them well.

Same here. The first time I saw "Seven" was on PPV. Just as Morgan Freeman went to open the box during the final scene under the power lines, the storm clouds obscured the signal. Took awhile to find out what was in the box.
With the frequency of storms down here, the satellite services lost their charm with me.

I've never had a problem with signal strength because I installed the system myself and got as strong of a signal as I could possibly get. It has to storm something fierce for it to flicker. I remember cable going out if a cool breeze blew by. I do not remember how the reliability of DISH is around here, but I am thinking it wasn't as good as Directv.

I switched from Dishnetwork to Direct TV when Dishnetwork quit carrying FX. Lost my Sons of Anarchy! Got pissed, and switched. So far, so good.

Thanks for all your replys. Sorry if I opened up some old wounds for some of you. It looks like Direct TV has the most votes. I have Direct but Dish is offering me about $447 in savings over the next 2 years with better channels and a 100 hr HD DVR compared with Directs 40 hour DVR. I have talked to customer service at Direct and have heard three different offers. I just don't trust them unless it is in writing.

Technology for dish and direct is very similar. Channels are also very similar except for the NFL Sunday Ticket on direct only. The key to reliability is the initial install. Neither system is any good if they are put in poorly. Essentially it's a wash.

We got tired of dealing with Who-Knows-What-A-Stan overseas customer service reps with direct TV when they for five months in a row double charged us for our service...we'd call them and they'd appologize and "fix" it, but it never got fixed permanently.
That, and them constantly changing what channels were in our "package".....
Dish has not bothered to try and screw us yet, and the CS/Billing Center is local up the interstate about 20 minutes....
We got tired of dealing with Who-Knows-What-A-Stan overseas customer service reps with direct TV when they for five months in a row double charged us for our service...we'd call them and they'd appologize and "fix" it, but it never got fixed permanently.
That, and them constantly changing what channels were in our "package".....
Dish has not bothered to try and screw us yet, and the CS/Billing Center is local up the interstate about 20 minutes....

I have learned a little about Directs service. Yes the calls are routed to India and the likes. If I get one of those I tell them that I want a person that speaks english in the US. But better and faster is to tell the computer CANCELATION and you will get a english speaking person in the US in less that 5 seconds.

I've never called them and got someone who wasn't American. In over a decade of service I can think of 2 channel lineup changes, and that was to ADD channels. Sucks you had such a bad experience; I hope this approach they took with you isn't their new way of doing things.

I've never called them and got someone who wasn't American. In over a decade of service I can think of 2 channel lineup changes, and that was to ADD channels. Sucks you had such a bad experience; I hope this approach they took with you isn't their new way of doing things.

If you live in a area serviced by At&t you should try U-verse. There is no commitment period, you can cancel anytime you would like no fees.

U-verse is awesome and their service if you have any problems blows away any service you get from ANY cable or dish company!

The music Channels on Dish are ALOT better. Huntin shows on DirecTV are better. Some dumbass decided to have the buttons on each companies remote(s) opposite of each other.....

After calling Dish about a simple channel issue and the customer service person could not speak two english words in a row and cut me off when I asked for a English speaking supervisor I decided to stick with Direct. They are sending me a updated DVR and $10 a month off my bill. Thanks for your input.

FX is back on Dish...
We lost a couple or three weeks of the Son's but whatever contract dispute being the problem must have been resolved.
The season finale episode of Son's was kick ass, and I'm looking forward to the next season of Justified.
'Bout the only two shows on TV that I make a point of watching.....
