I was curious if it is common practice on custom rifles to bring the lands in closer. I have a new rifle, and it is forcing standard length .308 into the lands to seat it. The OAL would have to be reduced .015 to get the projectile to just kiss the lands. I'm trying to find out if this is the norm, and is designed to give longer barrel life, or if mine just squeezed by Q.C.

I've seen short throats on quite a few custom barreled rifles. It can be good and it can be not so good. I prefer sammi spec chambers for most of what I do. That is 308 included. In my opinion most 30 cal projectiles for the 308 class are jump tolerant if not more happy to do so.

Yes its normal for the lanes to be closer to the bullet.I have 2 built rifles both on remington action and this is how my chamber is Min oal for 308 is 2.800 I'm in the lans at 2.728 I'm loading my loads at 2.777 which is. .023 below the min oal and still.. 049 into the lans.it doesnt hurt to get into the lanes some rifles like it some dont.but if u load into the lanes make sure u start at min charge.
