DIY cheek rest

So I’m cheap. I got a rifle, a scope and a mount. Well the mount is a little high. I’m not planning on spending a bunch of money or maybe I am. I just went for it. I added 10+ pounds of lead to the stock and filled the forend with carbon fiber and epoxy. Then I needed to raise the cheek weld. So today I got the drill and went for it. The end result is great. Gonna shoot it Saturday.

My dad did that with my first 12ga. I was 10 or 11. It was a Winchester single shot upland duck gun. Longest barrel I've ever seen on a shotgun. Recoil would knock dad on his ass with mag loads and it always sliced the web of his finger and thumb, so he hated it. I wanted something better than my 20 ga. and started carrying it. It was damn light and recoil was massive, so he filled the stock with lead shot. Made it a pain in the ass to carry, but a growing boy needs it. Sure did tame the recoil a lot though.

They sell lead weights to put in AR stocks and forearms too. For a range rifle that'll never see carry, it's not a problem, in fact, it'll make the rifle more stable.

I do like what he did with the DIY cheek rest, though I would've eliminated those bolt heads coming up. Possibly epoxy it to the tube and then cut slots in the cover for bolts to stick through and then run two holes through the side of the stock instead. Thumb nuts to loosen/tighten. Sorta like some others on the market.

Nice work, counter sink those screw heads or that will get uncomfortable real fast when shooting. You could epoxy the top piece and avoid using screws.

It worked great. I put gaff tape over the screws eventually but it didn’t matter. It was very comfortable

Nice work, counter sink those screw heads or that will get uncomfortable real fast when shooting. You could epoxy the top piece and avoid using screws.

The screws are 5” long and that is counter sunk. The kydex is only 0.90 thick so can only counter skink so far down. Also kydex does not like being glued.

I did a thicker piece of kydex with two carraige bolts squeezing through the stock. Topped that with a thin piece of foam sheet from Hobby Lobby. Supper comfy, light, and cheap. I have this on my 300wm hunting rifle.
