Searched but couldn't find anything on this. Anyone ever try to mold an epoxy or other type of plastic fill to make a vertical A-5 style grip on a standard hunting stock? Thinking about trying it on a Tikka light stock.
Tagging, I have a heck of a time getting comfortable behind my stock when prone due in part to the rake of the grip, it's the one thing I wish I could replace about my gun.
Never tried it personally, but if I were going to go about it, I'd call up the guys at Smooth-On, Inc. first and ask them what products they'd recommend using...they're support is great and they should be able to help you understand what process/materials/etc... would work best.
Not sure if that one will be strong enough, but it would probably make for a good material to form the handle as you want it, then make a mold off of it and cast it in something stronger (possibly the Onyx industrial resin, Task 12 Resin, or Task 18 Resin). Again, I'd call them, tell them what you're trying to do and get their take on it...
I have done grips on 2 different savage stocks. I used a combination of fiberglass, body filler and some aluminum rod reinforcement after I cut a lot of the plastic stock away. If I were to do another one. I would use an epoxy resin and filler combo to make my own filler, like body filler but stronger. I have had no problem with my stock nor my friends stock that we did. They get dragged out coyote hunting and to the fields to smash on ground hogs on a regular basis.
I used a clay called "Das" clay I think. It's easy to mold and form how you want and it dries hard. You can even sand it after it dries if you want. Then I went over the top with Marine Tex and did some texturing. Marine Tex is super strong stuff and I would not be worried about it holding up. I was pretty happy with how it came out. Definitely more comfortable to shoot now.
