I fabricated this bottom metal to use AI magazines on my savage .300 win mag. I know CDI makes a great product, but I wanted to take on the project. This same process could apply to any bolt action. I salvaged the aluminum from some scrap in the dumpster at work and bought all the screws ect from ACE. I used a 4.5" grinder, drill press, files, dremel ect. to do the work. Mostly the stuff any guy has in his garage.

Nice work. I take it that you don't have a TIG? Neither do I. You might consider using some of the aluminum soldering products that are commonly available to reinforce your box and joints.

No, I don't have a TIG, that would be nice though.. The aluminum soldering products sound worth looking into, but I don't plan on using them on this project, it is plenty strong the way it is. I just need to finish out the inletting and bedding for the pillars, then I will blast it and gunkote it...I havn't moved up to cerakote yet.

I finished up the DBM, gunkoted everything OD, and installed a new Critereon 26" barrel from Northland. The group below was shot at 200 meters (220 smk 65grns RL17 @ 2868). It will be a under 3/4moa shooter easy. The DBM works flawlessly, one of the best updgrades I have done. Now I need to buy more mags....I have to say, I love the fact I could do all this work and barrel it in my own garage, gotta love savage.

Re: DIY Savage 110 DBM

nice job. is the release easy to get to? i dont see it hanging down and its hard to tell how easy it is to get to. at the gun shows here we always have a guy selling welding rods for aluminum. its more like a stick of solder. works with propane torches. also a little bondo will smooth that out in thwe seams and joints and give it a cast look. but a good TIG welder will make that all look even better

good work man, keep on it, you now have a side job, lol

Re: DIY Savage 110 DBM

Axeman,
The magazine release is the small tab in the trigger guard, all you have to do is reach out with your trigger finger and depress it down.
308MAUS3R also mentioned using aluminum welding/soldering products, I may use those in the future, but I stuck to allen heads for this one.
Thanks all for the kudos, I don't see me marketing anything, but I would like to see more guys fabricating their own stuff.

Nice work. Just a quick function question: if you rest the rifle on an empty magazine can you cycle the bolt?

Did you have to clearance the receiver at all?
