Do we have a vet on the Hide?

So about a week ago I notice my dog has some scabs on her back.
Did not think much of it we live in the country. She’s inside most of the time.
Today I’m outside working my wife tells me the dogs hair is falling out or got pulled out gently when they were looking at her back. They put medicine on her.
I find this out after the fact.
She’s been with us over a year we have had no problems. We have an inside cat , he is fine. A few months ago the wife got a hedge hog. It’s fine. The hedge hog is next to the dog create.
I can’t think of anything new.
she takes flea and tick medicine that hasn’t changed. Same with heart worm medicine.
We have gotten an above ground pool and she has been sprayed with that water . Chemical burn?

Dumb question.

You said you put flea/tick medicine on her. There are a few brands now that actually say that you need to put smaller amounts over multiple spots and/or kind of drag the area you apply it to out. Are you dumping it all in 1 small spot and how long ago was it applied?

I found this out years ago when they changed whatever formula or concentration in the medicine I was giving my dogs on the nape of their neck and both of them ended up with a bald spot and scabs in the area you apply it to that look a lot like your picture.

It looks like Mange but could also be that your dog has allergies. Mange is a mite that a Vet can find very fast, as stated above see your Vet

Planning to take her Monday.
Just trying to see if there is something I should do now or if I need to take her to the 24/7 vet in town.

no change in food.

I thought maybe mange but the two times I’ve seen mange on dogs you see it more than just along the back.
Her ears , legs , belly and everything else look great.

Could it be an insect or spider bite? Thinking a Recluse spider could result in tissue damage like that.

Different types of mange. One is/can be localized according to AKC. Vet (as everyone else has said) is the best bet at this point for sure.

First, have you bathed her recently?

This looks exactly like what happened to my pup after I used "dawn" for a little bath..... had a horrible reaction...scabbed up, hair fell out, and eventually started bleeding. Turns out it was an allergic reaction, which funny enough, also happens with chlorine (at least to my bassets). I would give her a good wash with oatmeal dog wash (its what my vet recommended), get em to the vet, and see if its an allergic reaction or mange so you can avoid it in the future.

Yes I gave her a bath right before this happened she was swimming in the pond when I was trying to fish. My son also shot her with a water gun filled from the pool water. The same weekend.

My dog had hair falling out at one time and wouldn't stop scratching. The scratching caused staph as well. Could be mange, could be topical allergy, could be food allergy that has just appeared. We had to rule out mange and then topical allergies. Then tried different foods and finally a blood allergy test. Turns out she's allergic to fish and beef. I would definitely let the vet take a look and rule out mange though and if needed something to treat the reaction. Due to her allergies she has thinner hair down the center of her back and sides of her belly. Shoulders, neck, chest, legs, face, head all normal.

I asked recently about a problem w my dog's nose.
The guys here said exactly what the vet said about her nose, and when our vet said to treat her this way, to fix her, it was exactly what our guys here said. Thankyou very much dudes, you made it easy for me to feel good about our vet and our dogs care. In fact, while looking at how well her nose has healed I was going to relive my thread about her to show off her nose and mostly to thank the guys.

Is it near where your kid shot her with the water gun? Dogs have weird allergies to shit at complete random. She ever in the pool before this and had no issues?

This can be a ton of things. If nothing has changed then it can be anything from an allergy, to some kind of bite/infection, to a spot your dog just decides to lick like crazy and makes 100000 times worse in the process.

Go to the vet just to be sure. There's a 99% chance they'll put the same topical ointment you're using on it and give her an antibiotic. You're going to make sure it isn't whatever the other 1% of it is.

That should have been the end of the discussion. The vet we had for almost 20 years made known that patients on file could call with emergencies 24/7. (Might wanna look into that....) The shithole town I live in has a 24/7 emergency vet services. I am once again stunned that any member(s) would ask for such advice on their pets welfare on the internet. Unfuckingbelievable.

If she is on Nexgard, it is not mange. We actually use it to treat both types of mange (demodex and sarcoptic). If the hair easily pulls off and the skin underneath is ulcerated, it sounds like a hot spot, or pyotraumatic dermatitis if you want the expensive word. Without actually looking at her, it is hard to tell for sure, and take her to you regular vet on Mon. You can try to clip the hair around the affected area until you see unaffected skin and clean the wound with mild antiseptic, then apply a triple antibiotic.

Dish soap will dry their skin. Learned to use oatmeal bath, or reputable "dog wash", at a young age with my first dog. Thought I was doing her a favor, poor thing dried right up.

I have used Dawn for a skunk encounter, but oatmeal bath after that

Hard to tell from the photos. And she will never give advice over the internet to friends, let alone strangers (it's impossible to accurately diagnose without hands-on, and there's rules against this).

Possible pyoderma. Shouldn't take too long to get cleared up.

Looks like a hot spot to me. My GSD used to get these pretty often when he was a younger dog.

there are lots of OTC hot spot sprays you can get from the pet store/amazon/etc.

dogs skin can be sensitive af, then they chew on it when it itches and make it way worse. That spray will have anti itch, pain relief, and various oils to help it start healing up.

my GSD HATES the vet with a passion and will bite to kill vets. Has to be sedated every time he goes so he only goes to the vet for really serious things. I would try a $10 spray on it before I sunk a couple hundred dollars into a vet bill.

The one down side is that the 24 hour emergency vets are really fucking expensive. When I first got my wolfdog she got an infection in her uterus, started passing a bit of blood. I took he to the emergency vet and after the first test they knew what the problem was and could have solved it with an antibiotic but caught me worried and sold me a bunch of stuff she didnt need, ultrasound etc. $700 dollars later...

As in, how HOT was the water when it hit the dog? Could THAT be a contributing factor? Just wondering...

It was cool water .
I have to watch my son he likes to get wet with the hose. Black or green hose in the KS sun that water can be hot! Wife killed one of her plants last year. Turned it on and started watering.

Dog is doing a lot better she’s still going into the vet to try to find out what caused it.

I picked up a rescue Easter and been fighting the itch since about a week after that. Benadryl (dyphenhydramine) 1 mg. per pound body weight, will help the itch until you can get it to the vet. Still haven't a clue as to the cause, diagnosed as dry skin, flea allergy or the mange. Used Paramite for the mange for 5 weeks. Johnson's Baby Shampoo is probably better than Dawn. Good luck.

Can’t diagnose it for sure but future reference for some of you. If you are treating any of your animals for flea’s, mites, most intestinal worms. I suggest you keep Liquamycin 200, tylan 200, safeguard horse dewormer and pour on ivermectin. I have a small farm and with lots of free range poultry so depending on the season and weather worms and other stuff can spread like wildfire. You can treat most anything your animals will get with those items. If I didn’t have that stuff I there’s no way I could afford a vet every time an animal got something.

Wonderful! Allergies suck, but better safe than sorry and if a friendly shampoo and some allergy meds fix it....small price.

I give my dog a monthly shot for environmental allergies. They can do a blood test and determine what the mix is that the dog needs. Couple hundred bucks a year for the vial. I have a massive poplar tree behind the house and my dog is allergic to poplar trees so I empathize.

Luckily she does good with bath time. Twice a week till the shampoo is gone. 4-6 weeks is what he said it should last.
She hates the let it sit on her for 10min part.
Plus pills twice a day, she thinks it’s a treat.

Be careful with the shampoo getting on you. I went through this last year with my Malinois pup. I got his allergy under control but I had an allergic reaction to the shampoo. Be sure to rinse it off yourself while you're in the waiting period during the shampoo.
