I just dont like the added length. I have never actually even screwed mine on. Maybe next year ill give it a go for science.

On shorter barreled guns (16-18”) i thought it looked funny. On my 24” suppressed barrel i agree. I honestly just have to pull it out of the box and give it a go. I was out in non-stop rain the other day and it didnt even cross my mind that a sunshade would have helped a ton. What bothers you about the length? The barrel is longer. An extra 2-3” on the scope really does nothing to the scope to make it any different.
45-90, now I mean this in the kindest, gentlest way. Hopefully you will take it with a pinch of salt and smile…I never use a sunshade, unless forced to, like sun coming directly into the scope, at an organized rifle range, with fixed positions...out here I just change positions, and shoot from a shaded position, never even consider a sunshade, they are always left behind.
Never purchased one that didn't come with the scope. And only one was ever used, once, when I had to go to the dreaded rifle & pistol club to shoot, with fixed positions directly facing the sun.

Every time I’ve tried to use one at a match there’s been a stage with a barricade that was so tight on space I had to remove it.
So for the most part I don’t run one.
Id say there's probably one prop a match that the sunshade gets in the way where i shoot. I probably should just remove it for that one stage. There are a very very small number of props that have a tight enough hole to fit through but they are the vast minority of props and I very rarely come across a prop that will not allow a sunshade. If I do then I take it off for one stage and then put it back on. The vast majority of the time it is functioning to help far outweighs the one or two props it won't work in.

However I can't say I've ever noticed a difference by having the sun shade fitted, and when I do start using one I inevitability end up just leaving it off.
The main reason I should use one is in the rain but I haven't got wet recently, which is a nice change from my last shooting season.
I live in New Zealand, a lot of our matches (for better or worst) generally look more like field matches, they haven't yet moved fully towards "barricade benchrest". Many matches still have offhand shooting, and I still use a sling at most matches.Wow. Not sure where you shoot but I can only think of one prop in all the matches I have shot it recently both centerfire and rimfire that would cause an issue and that is the metal pig at Pigg River in VA. If you are getting one a match then they must be making some funky props around you. LOL

Small holes in the props is far from the worst thing we have to deal with unfortunately....Nothing wrong with that. Have some positional in a match I am shooting this weekend but they should cut bigger holes in the props. Lol
Not that I know of.Does anybody make a slidable universal sunshade? I rarely find the need for one but sometimes I do. Is there a slide on shade that can be slid out when needed?

Gets in the way of the clip ons. Yeah I'm analJust put your sunshade on it there when you need it and you will never notice out there when you don’t.
Yep. Totally agree.Just put your sunshade on it there when you need it and you will never notice out there when you don’t.
I noticed that the S&B and Razor 4.5-27 shades are very matte black inside, whereas the PST II scopes are a tiny bit more reflective. Hadn’t really paid attention to that before.Sunshades should be Vanta Black or similar on the inside.
Worth trying to flip it inside out and hitting it with matte spraypaint? Not that I know of.
I thought I won a (mini) lottery when I found the perfect sized cheap neoprene can koozie that fit my 56mm/50mm scopes. Could slide that thing back and fwd no problem.
After testing, turned out that it actually made flare worse. I think it was the neoprene; after close inspection there’s microscopic little sparkles in it.

Flare / Glare / Backlit notes on 4 scopes (NX8 4-32, Razor Gen II 4.5-27, Razor LHT 4.5-22, S&B 5-25)
Here is an unscientific (and flawed) BACKLIT flare resistance test of four scopes I own. I aimed them under a setting sun during one single session. It’s flawed in the way that I didn’t have shades for two of the scopes. Plus dust, flare from improvised sunshades, and possible flare from a...www.snipershide.com
Bummer.
Eh, I don’t have a use for it now anyway now that I’ve bought the S&B factory sunshade. And spray paint has a tendency to flake and migrate…Worth trying to flip it inside out and hitting it with matte spraypaint?
