does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

Re: does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

This doesn't answer your question directly, but I shoot 147 gr. milsurp(FN)through my Sako TRG. I use it strictly for shooting at steel.

Re: does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

The Radway I shoot moa. the dag seemed to have excessive pressure/high effort bolt lift in my Crusader so I didnt screw around with it. in a stock 700 the dag was a bitch to extract

Re: does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

I was always curious about mil-surp ammo to practice position shooting up close.

Never did it, but following this thread.

Greyson

Why put 89 octane in your Ferrari?

I have about 200rds of Portugues 7.62x51 NATO, I shot about 10rds through my 700 Tactical. The 147gr had really light recoil, and some muzzle flash. It didn't shoot too bad either, but I wasn't trying. I don't see the harm, some may be corrosive but it isn't a big deal.

I'd get more good 7.62NATO surplus given the chance to get it for a decent price.

Re: does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

Ive shot tens of thousands of F4 ammo a lot was issued through SLR's m60's and Mag58's and the rest through various bolt action rifles the F4 can be very accurate if you get a god year however it realy requires a .307 bore in a true .308 bore they sometmes do not shoot well because it is 7.62 not 308 it can have troubles sealing in a loser .308 bore. the jackets are harder in Australian F4 ammo so if you have a soft barrel it will wear out faster. I have shot to 1000 yards with 26"+ 7.62 barrels and F4 ammo it will do it so get some and try it if it shoots in your rifle and the price is right you have very temp stable ammo but unlike US surplus it has burdan primers so it is only good for one shot unless you have a hydro depriming tool like me and then de crimp the primer pockets and then source RWS berdan primers we used to reload it years ago when other brass was hard to get and even necked it to 243. i have cases here fired in a bolt action 243 that have also been fired in a Valmet 308, SLR, M14, M1A and FAL all the marks from the boltfaces are imprinted over each other it would realy give a forensic team some fun trying to work out what it was fired in.

Anyway if you dont have the soft barrel and it is a .307 the Australian ammo is good if the price is right.

Also the German ammo is very good and will shoot better in .308 bores and the RG is also fine but the Aust F4 and German ammo especialy the *10* headstamped ammo is very accurate the RG is OK but all of the above are non corrosive and safe for use.

I'm in this camp as well. For me, I'm just concerned about quality control with mil surp. In thousands and thousands of rounds, a couple cartridges must be loaded incorrectly. Knowing my luck, those would be the rounds I shoot through my custom rig. I'm probably paranoid about all this, but it's just not worth the risk to me. I only shoot handloads, Black Hills, or FGMM in my rifles because I trust the hands that made those rounds. To each his own...

Re: does anyone run mil surplus 147 gr. in theirs GAP?

Ok to answer a few questions.

Firstwhere i purchased the F4 was through the National Rifle association in Australia at the state shops. i have also purchased it through gunshows. i have about a thousand rounds left.

As for the Hydro decapper i made it from a Land rocer axle. it has a 1/2" hole drilled down into it around 4" deep then it has a tapered brass plug the shape of the drill bit tip to make the base of the hole square. the base is then 1/2" thick under the plug and a hole drilled through with clearence ont he primer i think around 1/4" i can check. then you have a 1/2" piece of rod i use stainless. you drop a primed case into the axle then place it in a bucket of water to fill it remove the decapping die placing the stainless ron on top of the water then on a hard surface hit with heavy hammer the water can not compress and pushes the primer out. when they are crimped the first time it takes a realy good hit but after the first time just a tap and they come out easily. i have seen the claw type but they are not strong enough to remove heavily crimped primers and have seen some people make a double headed decapping pin that they then carefuly align with the double flash holes then then deprime but out of al of them a hydro decapper works realy well.

IF you want a diagram i could draw you one up.

As for German MEN ammo if it is late manufacture it will be safe to use as it is all non corrosive and high quality.

The only surplus i never reccomend is steel cases ammo or tracer and AP from a match barrel it can etch the bore scrape it or wear it out faster use high quality military ammo.

I think my steaks are the best I have eaten (my opinion and I cook em like I like em) and I prefer mine with ketchup as well. The best steak is made better with the red stuff
