I'm curious as well. I was thinking about it since I have a new unfired Sako TRG-42 (338 Lapua) and a few .308 blanks sitting aound. I'm sure barrels would have a very short life.

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

There are two 30-338's, so it would help to know about which you are speaking of:

The older 30/338 Win Mag which is the 338 Win Mag simply necked to 30 caliber, which is a fine round, and one I shot for more than 25 years.

The 30/338 win mag was a fine LR round, with a water capacity similar to the 300 H&H Mag. In fact 300 H&H starting load data was used. Most shooter do not know that when the 300 Win Mag was introduced many 30 cal bullets were not suited for this round due to to it's short neck. Bullets would be pushed back into the case. Most 30 cal bullets back then were made for the 30-06, 308 and 300 WBY, which has necks greater than 1 caliber long.

The 30/338 Win Mag was developed as a "short magnum", with a long neck to alleviate this problem.

The 300 win mag was made with a very short neck, to maximize it's capacity, for it's caliber. In fact many bullet manufacturers made "special" bullets just for the 300 WIN Mag to alleviate this problem. It was not until the late 1970's that most bullet makers redesigned their entire bullet lines to work with all 30 cal rounds, including the 300 Win Mag.

The other is the newer 30-338 Lapua, of which I know nothing about.

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

I have a 30-338 that I have had for years. It is built on a pre 64 long action, shilen barrel, and mcmillan stock. Shoots good and it a good hunting rifle. Brass is easy to make by necking down 338wm brass and fire forming. It shoots about 200-250fps slower than my 300 wby but is a lot more efficient and does not kick as much.

Sako TRG42 in .338LM could be switch-barreled with a .30/338win; takes a new bolt body, as the Lapua is .580" boltface, and a new magazine in .300win size. About $550 for the bolt body and one magazine.

A 42 in LM could go .30-378wby with only an extractor change-out, or do the necked down .30LM. Might want to consider necking down the .338 Norma, or look at the Lazerroni Patriot and Warbird ctgs. Those are .378wby based ctgs and for about $12 for an extractor, plus your barrel; you're in business. Patriot has brass and loading dies available from Lazerroni. It is worth a hard look as a short case should do more for you in the precision dept.

The most common 30-338 is the 338 Win Mag necked down, so I assume you're talking about this. You don't run across it much. When you do, it is with someone who reloads. It is very similar to a 300WM ballistically. The shoulder of the 30-338 case is set back and a little shorter than a 300 WM. It holds a few grains less powder and runs a little slower than a 300WM. 30-338 brass is hard to come by. You would have to size down some 338 WM and fire form your brass.

Or run virgin .300Win Mag brass through a .30-338 die and trim it to length. YMMV

Good luck

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

I have a 30-338 LM Improved. Its a absolute hammer! While i was just breaking it in i shoot a 4" group at 750 on a piece of steel! Was using the 240 grain SMK. Didnt have a chrono with me but i plan on getting some numbers with it this weekend. Had one for a heavy BR comp gun and it was pushing the 240 over 3k....

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

Guys i think he is talking about the 30-338 Lapua Improved like Bobby has. I know of 2 more that will have one as soon as Bobby gets us a action ready....This thing is a hammer.....Bobby give us the data on this if you will.....Meantime i will wait on that action?????

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

I also have a 30/338 Lapua Improved, I shoot a 210 VLD at 3250 fps and have shot many sub .5 moa groups out to 1000yds with the best being a witnessed .22 moa 5 shot group at 600yds.
I love the cartridge but it is a totally custom deal with also having to fireform the brass and is only about 100 fps better than a 300 RUM but it's worth it because of the excellent Lapua brass.
Mine is built on a Sako TRG-S M995 action with a 31" Lilja barrel bedded in a McMillan A-5 stock.

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

could one of the owners of the 30 lapua improved , give us a quick run down on forming the brass and dies used etc please
cheers

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

My version of the 30/338 Lapua Improved is a little different then most.
Mine has the shoulder pushed back about .060" to make a slightly longer neck so I had custom dies/form bushings made by Neil Jones to help with case forming.
First I neck the case down from .368" to .350" with a special neck/shoulder bushing then neck it down with another bushing to .332" along with pushing the shoulder back just enough to chamber the case.
Then I fill it up with powder and a bullet and fire away.
Cases come out formed perfectly and then I just full length size them when needed with the last die/bushing combo I used to form the case.
Forming a standard 30/338 LM IMP would be easier, just neck down the case in a couple of steps and fireform.
Hope this helps,
Wayne aka WAMBO

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

Not talking about the lapua, just the .338 necked down. I own a remington action, montana barrel, .30-338. I am new to the site and curious if it is very popular among you guys. I am thinking of selling the gun and just trying to find a market for it. This is my first custom gun, a friend does all my loading. I shoot 150 grain noslers for hunting. The gun shoots just over 1/2" groups as long as i can hold em there! I have been very pleased with its performance. It has a 26" fluted barrel on a hs stock, which is heavy. I am a small guy and this is primarily a hunting rifle, and I am simply tired of luggin it around. Anyway seems like nobody hates the round.

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

I have a 40X Remington Single Shot 30-338 with a set of dies I will sell. I have had it several years and never shot it. Has the original Remington barrel on it which I think is 27".
Also have some brass, maybe three boxes for it. Hit me with PM if anyone interested.

Re: Does anyone shoot a .30-.338

I have one. Remington Custom Shop .30-338 chambered 40XB-KS. Ordered/Bought in 1990 while I was in Okinawa. 27" bull SS bbl. Nice stock. I think they stopped chambering the 40XB in .30-338 in early 90's, though I'm sure they will do a customer request.
Rifle shoots real nice..haven't used it much over the years..probably less than 50 rds thru it. Scoped with a 10X Zeiss which is also no longer available.
