Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

I just emailed them that very question and also if they weren't offering them as standard product how much a custom set would be. I let you know when I get a response.

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

David,

thats great actually as I e-mailed them as well and also sent a link of the .338 Norma Mag thread here on the hide. I suspect that in time they will make them, especially if we get more people to request them.

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

pc3, here is the response I just received. Kinda sucks because I while I have and use other brand dies, I have found the Redding dies to be consistent and excellent overall.

"Thank you for your interest in Redding Reloading Equipment. We have no plans to offer Competition Dies for the 338 NORMA MAG, and we don’t make them on a custom basis. Sorry.

Patrick T. Ryan

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

I am not sure how the .338 Lapua and the .338 Norma differ, but is may be possible to have the floating case holders in the seater and the neck sizer seater opened up using a chamber reamer. Then one would only need a body die or a full-length die with a neck bushing (so you can remove it).

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

Your better off with the hornady set, at least your going to get a in spec sizer die that sizes the norma properly. I know forester is making the micrometer seaters.

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

Here is what Redding wrote back to me on this issue.

Hi Paul.

Thank you for your interest in Redding Reloading Equipment. We’re back from our annual plant shutdown.

In our custom series, we offer full length, neck sizing and seating dies for the 338 NORMA MAG. We could also make Type S Bushing Dies but haven’t done so yet. We do not offer our Competition Bushing Neck Die or Competition Seating Die for the cartridge. A skilled gunsmith/machinist could probably convert a 338 LAPUA MAG Competition Seating Die.

Patrick T. Ryan

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

Doesn't this seem contradictory from the email I received? I realize he addressed only my specific question but I would think he would have mentioned their alternatives. As a result, I ordered a Neil Jones set equivalent to their competition series.

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

David,

Can you pls. provide contact details for Neil Jones Dies I have never heard of them ? and it sounds as though there as good as Redding's and have the nice micrometer seater etc. ?

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

My understanding is they are more precise because they are custom made for your chamber. When you place your order, he explained that he wants you to send 3 pieces of brass that have been fired in your rifle 3 or 4 times so he can accurately machine the die for your chamber. It has to do with the 2 stages of brass memory. He makes full length sizing bushing dies with micro adjust and well as micrometer seating dies. The only downside is because of the the size of the 338 Norma case, the sizer can't be made in the standard 7/8 thread. You need a larger Rockchucker or comparable to handle the die size. The seater is standard size however. He is a very interesting guy to speak with. It would seem given the distance most who have this cartridge would want to be accurate at, this level of precision makes sense. His info is at:

Brass, while not in great supply yet, is less expensive than Lapua 338 brass. Everyone I have spoken with who owns or have fired a rifle in this chambering have come away impressed, including my gunsmith, and he hates everything...lol I don't think this cartridge will be a fad.

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

David,

my smith has used him before apparently so he is going to take care of it and order some from him. Thanks for that !!

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

Redding made the dies that I used for all the load development on the .338 Norma.

New St Marks ball powder giving very good accuracy with 300grn SMK's 91grns giving av 2700fps out of 26" Bartlein Barrel.

After that accuracy began to fall off until max load within pressure 93.2grns giving 2780fps

Hopefully this powder will become available to the shooting public next year

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma MagYet?

Whats the closest burning rate to St Marks for other powders ?

In particular ADI powders which make some of the Hodgen powders; H1000 and Retumbo (these I have access too)

Ganyana, I really hope their current stance on producing dies changes then, I like their products.

What label will the St Marks powder be sold under?

Re: Does Redding Make Comp Dies for .338 Norma Mag

From all accounts my smith seems to think I will have "No Dramas" with Neil Jones Dies. I have said to just get them made, so Neil will probably be doing my set along with yours David.

Hodgdon, probably as they distribute it now.
