Hey guys. I run a close range brush gun (.308 18" barrel) with a Leopold 2-7 vxr. My wife and kids have been taking over this gun so I'm going to put something similar together for myself. They don't make the scope anymore and I'm having trouble finding an equivalent. The application here is an extremely fast lift and shoot scenario. Most of the time it is on two power and I always run it illuminated even if dim.

What is so absolutely stellar about this scope for this application is it's small and very lightweight. The illumination is absolutely daylight bright, which l almost always run on because it makes it so much quicker to get on target. 2x is perfect and in conjunction with the illumination can easily be ran both eyes open. It does excellent in the low light. It has the perfect reticle for this. HEAVY duplex with a 2 moa illuminated dot.

The only thing l've found so far that is interesting is the Burris Fullfield IV illuminated 2.5-10.

Do you guys know of anything else out there?

Depends on how many boxes it checks off. Maybe 700. I don't feel like I need to spend a whole ton considering the use of this scope. It's not so much about high-end features, The right mix of features.

Take a look at the Arken EP8 1-8x. It’s only $299 and has a good reticle for fast shots. There is a smaller center dot for 8x and at 1x there is a larger outer ring but you still see the center dot for precision. Worth a look.

Those 2-7 vxr were great little scopes, have several on lever guns. Not a lot out there like them. If you can find one, the vortex razor LH 1.5-8 is great as well. I think Swarovski may make a 1.5-6 that I would assume would be nice in that application. Leupold 2.5-8x36 would be a cheaper option and somewhat similar to vxr, but not quite as good IMO

Yeah, optics have changed. The VXR was a nice scope. The VX Freedom is NOT a VXR.

Fortunately, this need that you have comes up at a time when 1-6x second focal plane scopes have become about as good as they're going to get and you can get something pretty dang nice in just about any price range.

Yes, for your needs, I'd be looking at an LPVO. I wouldnt worry too much about comments regarding it not gathering enough light. A decent LPVO will pull in more than enough light at 1-4x.

My 18" .308 "brush gun" wears a Vortex Gen II PST. Nice, simple reticle and very good glass. Still the standard by which others are judged. $600 usual price, less on sale or used.

If you can spend a little more, the Trijicon Credo HX is very nice.

If you just want to stay as cheap as possible, Arken EP8 or Primary Arms SLX Nova.

I'd spend the money and get the Vortex. The only downside is that it's a bit heavy at around 24oz. I know the PST is very old news, but im wowed by it everytime I look through it.

Thanks guys, l kind of ruled out the LPVOs. Ideally l would like a 2-10 but l haven't found anything that hits my criteria. I have no need of 1x and many times have wished for just a bit more than 7x. A 3x9 if it checked all the boxes would be ok but l am. HUGE fan of 2x and won't give it up without a fight. That SWFA is sooo great. Just needs an illuminated point and it would be PERFECT.
