Gunsmithing Does this make you queasy?

No matter how many I do, I always feel a little sick to my stomach at this point.......

I know most aren't using tape or anything these days, but I want to be sure of the clearance for my Badger M5- I installed the pillars yesterday so I want to be sure action is down on them.

BR-my wife's become a vegetarian, so the DevCon was the best shit I've seen on a paper plate at home in a while!

Speaking of DevCon, this is the last bed or two left in my 1lb tub, it must be getting old-2hrs and it was to hard to trim, had to dremel a lot of it.

That's freaky... I was bedding my Manners T4 tonite and told one of my twins, "I think I'm going to be sick..." I'd just stuck the action in the Devcon and got that same feeling I always get at this point.

To make it worse, I installed the pillars at the same time. First time I've tried that!

i just did my first bedding job yesterday. i made sure to practice on a friend's bran new a5 stock and stiller action

. luck for him, it turned out great.

It was actually quite painless. Tried Roscoe's method and worked quite well. Lot's of worrying for no reason.

I've always done it in two (or with bottom metal, three) steps.

I was going to try that method, but I was more concerned with my bottom metal being flush and the Badger M5 feeding right that I decided to do the pillars first.

Has nothing to do with getting old. Walk away from Devcon with a temp anywhere above 75 and you could be in a world of hurt. I've had Devcon set up hard in less then an hour during the summer months when the temp is above 90 in my little shop. Also if your mix ratio is off just a little with too much hardener it will cure faster.

One other thing based on the commit of others about releasing the action from bedding by whacking it with a rubber mallet. I’ve never needed to whack a barreled action with a rubber mallet. If you need to do this you need better release agent.

I just put a little bit of upwards pressure on the barrel and give the bottom of the forearm a light smack with my hand and the barreled action pops right out (all 4 times)

I tried Johnson's paste wax this time, and despite significantly more vertical bearing surface on the Manner's, one good smack on the bottom of the barrel (with the palm of my hand) was greeted by that satisfying "crack" and it lifted right out. Last time I used clear shoe wax and may have done it wrong. I had to work for 10 minutes to get that out. No mallet though.

Actions getting stuck might be a good thing. I mean isn't that why we bed the action--to get a glove like snug fit? Nothing is more snug than a bedded/glued in action--lol....

I've done 3 stocks now...and I was nervous each time. Luckily they all turned out good. The only real problem that I have had was dremeling the overflow out of the mag well, I can never really get it flush...but it shoots fine.

I know the feeling... these guys that post pics of their bedding job after clean-up on the mill... just not fair.

If you don't mind, post some pics of the finished job once you get your action out. I'm interested in how this works when you bed over existing pillars. Didn't know you could do that.

Oops - missed that picture.

If you are rebedding over existing pillars, why not use the guard screws to hold the action in place instead of tape?

Isn't that what is called skim bedding?

using the guard screws induces stress into the bedding job, thats why they tape the barrel in 2 places and it completely floats the action in the stock

Tried that one time. The first time. The last time. When I'd loosen one of the action screws the other end of the action would flex up out of the stock. Not good. Stress free is better.

The first one I did I spent five hours wondering if I would need some c4 to get it apart. It came out with just a few taps but the what if was their until it came out.

When i did mine, I forgot that the screws were still in the pillars, I could not figure out why the damn thing would not come loose, but I remembered before I got any crazy ideas about getting the action apart from the stock. Popped right out when I took the screws out. You seem to have done nice bedding job, congratulations.

One quick question about ratio. I saw a post where someone listed a 2.5:1 ratio and I thought that was odd. I could have sworn the stuff I bought said 5:1 ratio.

...Or, you finally have to resign yourself to the fact that your bottom metal is now a permanent part of that really nice tiger stripe walnut stock. Knowing I'll have to cut that apart someday when I get the urge to make changes is what ties up my stomach. I could always just leave the bottom metal with it.

FWIW, the bedding did tighten groups up considerably.
