Was looking around at various online dictionaries wondering when, where & why the term "dope" was ever used to refer to a rifleman's firing solution.

Anybody know??

I've heard this too....but when going through my Sniper School one of my instructors was a very experienced competition shooter gave another story.

He explained that in the old days when a person took certain medicine for an illness they experienced a "change" in their condition. So eventually they gave medicine the nickname of "dope". Which is why you hear people refer to mind altering/changing medicine as "dope".....

Fast forward to the shooting world & shooters who would make a change in their scopes referred to "doping" the scope. So when they would tell others what their "change" was for a certain distance, they simply stated, "My dope is 5 MOA...."

Is this true....? Hell I have no idea & he could have probably pulled that right out his ass! But it sounded good at the time!

Personally, I like the "Data on Previous Engagement"....

Well.....the "Suger High" was definitely a "change in behavior" wasn't it? LOL!

My guess is that no one alive knows when or why it was first called that.

What we sometimes says to someone who put the wrong elevation on his rifle is that he's a dope - and that's why it's called that.

Good as any other story, I think.

DOPE = my stupid brain thinking that it's a good idea to dial wind, instead of holding, on a timed stage at the Shooter's Bash...and then dialing the wrong wind direction.

Interesting: I did find the several definitions of it in proper medicine seeming to infer "change"

Thanks fellas.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

During the training for Barrett 50 caliber, at the Whittington Center, Jon Weiler, the instructor and army sniper, refferred to it as "Data Obtained (by) Previous Experience". Seems reasonable to me.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

It all started the same time they began calling "thread sealing compound" for plumbing and hydraulics, Pipe Dope.

Just a different kind of pipe. (scope/barrel) Then there's the "Slope Doper" also, which adds a whole other dimension to the question.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

the previous engagement stuff is what you hear most lately... it's what I heard from my instuctor too... but from research I've done "dope" is a slang term for "factual information, especially of a secret or private nature"... so I have come to the conclusion that it is used that way. your "dope" is the information that you need to correct your final firing solution

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

Always thought it was: Data Off Previous Engagements

When I hear the word dope, I always think of this song and get in a sweet shooting groove. Turn up your volume.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

Interesting. In the semiconductor industry, we also call it doping when you add a little bit of impurities to silicon in order to achieve a desired modification of the behavior of the semiconductor. This was developed in the '40s.. I guess the term was more popular back in the first half of the 20th century.

Nowadays we just refer to the Lance Armstrong variety, and I guess it's a very convenient hat hook for a bunch of TLAs..

Like everything else in the military, even if it isn't one, they still try to make an acronym out of it.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

I just finished reading a book called In The Trenches 1914 to 1918 about a Canadian Scout Sniper named Frank Iriam. It was published from notes after his death.

He talks about getting the Dope on a Rifle and Target in the book. So it was used in WWI.

Re: "dope" = firing solution. Why? What dictionary?

It's old-timey slang for inside information, as in, "What's the straight dope?"

Also known as "the skinny", "the low-down" or "the poop."

I gather none of you guys ever watched the old Bowery Boys serials.
