I'm in Tx and can hunt on around 5000 acres , but there are lots of cattle on it etc. Mostly shooting rabbits, raccoons , coyote, hogs on occasion etc. mostly smaller game. I currently been using a custom 243 with 55gr vmax at 4200fps and 17hmr ruger.

What caliber when going to one gun would you fellow varminters recommend ?

I have looked at 17 fireball, 17 hornet, 17 wsm, 17hmr, 22mag etc.

The 17 centerfire rifles are all hard to find ammo and reloading stuff for and expensive to shoot.

Also keep in mind I sometimes shoot coons from trees and don't want a bullets that travels too far in case of a miss.

I was thinking semi auto Volquartsen 17hmr to fill my needs in super light model.

Any thoughts or recommendations ?

I would keep the 243 for the hogs but the others could be dispatched easily with either a 17hmr or 22wmr.

Personally I'd go 22wmr as its a good calibre and you can pick up rounds more easily and cheaply than a 17hmr.
