Any other smiths out there considering down sizing the base dimension on your reamers to account for the undersized Win and Rem brass? Or just telling customers to use Lapua/Norma/Hornady options. As seen in Chad's thread, this stuff is definitely running at the absolute max undersize they can get away with. .462-.463" at the web seems to be the norm with Rem/Win and where Lapua is .469-.470 with the stuff I have.

Re: Downsizing reamer dimensions

While it's not a bad idea to reduce the web slightly for some brass I typically don’t. The only dimensions I change are free bore and neck. If someone wants to use the Lapua, Nosler, Norma brand they may end up with a click at the top of their bolt lift as some 6BR's do. The click is due to an under sized web in the chamber and I've actually had one 338LM develop the click. The solution was to polish the chamber a little more and the click disappeared.

No matter how much you screw the FL die down, the click wont go away. The 338LM chamber, it looked 100% perfect prior to polishing and after. I guess it just needed a little attention to stop clicking. It's GTG now.

That’s the problem I think you'll end up with on some brass if the reamer web is reduced to accommodate the WW/Rem brass. Hope this helps, Merry Christmas

Re: Downsizing reamer dimensions

That was kinda my thinking as well. I normally just change the neck and freebore as well, but needed to order a couple new reamers and thought about experimenting. Probably not really worth it in the end.

Merry Christmas all!

Is the "click" caused by to tight of tolerences with the case web and chamber?

The click is actually your bolt handle hitting the receiver at the end of it's primary extraction. The case is slightly stuck in the chamber and when it brakes free the handle goes through the primary extraction and at the end hits the receiver with extra force.........."Click"

Re: Downsizing reamer dimensions

I've had some problems with extraction with the Win brass in a factory Rem 700 PSS DM. Like mentioned earlier, the brass is way undersized. Just wondering if that could be the problem...
I've cleaned the devil out of the chamber but was thinking about polishing it.
What would be the best way to that?

Thanks...

John

Re: Downsizing reamer dimensions

To date 1024 peeps have viewed my thread on small brass. Over 200 have viewed this thread.

If there was a magic wand to waive to compell everyone to write a "stink eye" letter to manufacturers demanding they tune up their production a bit I'd be first to zap tinkerbell with a can of raid and take it from her.

Itll never happen, but we all know the voice of masses is tough to ignore. That is how we fix this problem. David kiff isn't the answer on this one unfortunately.

Merry christmas.

Re: Downsizing reamer dimensions

There is weath on knowledge on this sight and the gunsmiths are top knotch, but the click you mentioned has been discussed tell the ends of the earth over on Benchrest central.

I'm not saying any one is right but, but a guy that goes by alinwa over there has some good logic to the click and how to get rid of it. Heck in his world the undersized brass might be a good thing, he would let it expand at the web in tell it stopped growing and have custome dies set to that measurement and not look back.

He claims he has well over 50 reloads on some 6x47 brass. I've also seen him shoot in 600 yrd Benchrest, and I can tell you he can and the stuff he builds shoots!

Sure, custom dies are to doing the same thing as polishing the web of the chamber in a lathe.

Custom Dies = no polishng because the dies are tighter at the web thus siznig the brass down more.

Polishing in the lathe (if required)= Standard Redding FL or body dies because they'll size the web down far enough to work in the polished chamber if the reamer was too tight to start with.

Granted, I've only had to polish the chamber a couple of times but either method will work. Most never know they have a problem if the gun's going bang when they jerk the trigger
