DPMS A3 new hight

Bump to Dustin at high tech tactical.com. Hes answered so many questions for me here in Fl.

Just bought DPMS Oricle in .308
I now realized that due to new rail height I cant but a single aftermarket rail for it.
I am looking for 12" or longer.. (hehe, thats was weird typing that sentence.)

I am asking all you gun nuts for help.. ( Im an idiot gun nut)
Any suggestions?

Tanks,

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

Samson Mfg has a new freefloat handguard out called the Evolution. Samson is making a version specific to the new DPMS .308 flattop upper rail height, and should have these ready to ship by SHOT 2011. They are also making a version for the AR10-height uppers like the older DPMS flattops, the AR10 flattops, the Mega MA-TEN, etc. So, Samson will be making the Evolution in three different versions: AR15, DPMS .308 low, and AR10.

More info: Samson Evolution (DPMS low version coming momentarily)

I also believe the most current Troy Industries DPMS rails match the new rail height.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

you can always do what DPMS wants you to do. you can buy a fore end from them. they make them to match of course. thats why they changed it. sampson would be the first to make anything for the new rail height that i have heard of. its gonna be interesting to see what the prices are since they are the ONLY one availanle other than DPMS.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

You can buy a troy rail. You gotta measure the height of the receiver that sits above the charging handle latch (the rearward most part of the receiver behind the rail of the receiver. If it measures 1/8" then you need the lower profile rails from Troy and if your receiver measures 3/16" then you need the higher profile rails from Troy.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

I have just run into this problem. I thought my LR308 was old enough to be the standard height and bought and SWS E1 15" rail that is 1/16" too tall.

So.. who makes uppers that are compatible with DPMS lowers that are the correct 3/16" height?

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

SI-Defense
Fulton Armory
JD Machine
Kaiser
Iron Ridge Arms
Tactical Machining (when they come out)
JP
POF (with some modifications because of different pivot/take down pin sizes)

All of these companies are actually compatible with the DPMS lower receiver (radius rear end)

The Ma-Ten, LWRC, LMT, and KAC uppers will work but there will be a gap and they are either really expensive or not available as a stripped upper.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

I'm waiting to hear back from fulton armory about the height of their uppers. Thanks for the info about the others... they are so expensive for just a stripped upper. I think I'm just going to wait for the Troy to come out. Funny, I emailed Troy a year ago and asked them to develope an Extreme rail for the 308.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

I'm 99.9% positive FA has the old height that you're looking for but if they come back and tell you they lower their's as well, SI makes a decent upper for $250, I think that will be you next option in terms of price. Tactical Machining should be coming out with their's soon and they will have the old height and judging by their lower receiver price I would assume they are going to be a good price. Good Luck though, let us know what FA says though

way ahead of you.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

there are so many good receivers, upper/lower sets for money close to the DPMS that are way nicer, screw DPMS and their proprietary crap. thats corporate thinking. some suit in a cubicle trying to get a bonus.

MA-10
JD Machine
Seekins/Spikes

and however many more are listed above

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

Well actually the DPMS receiver set is by far the cheapest set out there. If you get a DPMS upper and lower they can be had for $415. If you were to get a Tactical Machining lower with a DPMS lower you looking at $365-$385 depending on sales.

The Ma-Ten had an introductory price of $499 but are up to $592 now.

Si Defense come in around $550-$770 depending on options

IRA are $874, beautiful I own a set but at $874, nuff said ($1075 if you get a matched set).

So like I said the DPMS option is a pretty good deal and with companies like Troy, Samsons Mfg, JP and PRI making handguards to match the new lower height, it seems like a really good deal. I know a lot of people talk about the quality of the DPMS finish, but I personally like the Teflon coated anodized finish because of its uniformity, but to each their own.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

Ok just an update. Got off the phone with Fulton Armory and their uppers are the older taller height. So I ordered a stripped upper and will be switching out the new shorter DPMS upper.

I also called DPMS and asked if they had any old stock higher uppers and thy said no and directed me to call Fulton Armory.

Thanks for the input guys.

I had this very same thought but like you say I have no patience. I also love the SWS rail that I got and they won't be making one for the new height as far as I can tell.

Re: DPMS A3 new hight

i just ordered a troy trx extreme rail for my dpms. i hear its the lightest rail out there. i also like the fact i can add rails if needed. the youtube vids sold me on it.
