I just got a DPMS 308 lower in trade over the weekend and was wondering if you gentlemen could tell me where to get a reasonably priced, 24 inch bull barrelled upper. I'd like to make a decent mid-range target gun and money's tight. I plan on stocking the rifle with a MagPul PRS stock and a custom LPK; so I just need a good deal on the barrelled upper.
Thanks,
Jason

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

I just picked mine up from www.rguns.com
I went with a free floated 24", fluted & threaded on the A3 upper receiver with forward assist, dust cover, bolt and charging handle for $750. Also grabbed a vortex FH.

It's these kinds of buying splurges that keeps my girlfriend from wanting to marry me. Sooo.. things seem to be working out perfectly. Hahaha

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

I joined this site after my purchase and now think I may have made a mistake going so long. I'm seeing a large number of guys going with 18" and 20" etc.. a couple even talking about cutting their 24" down to 21" or shorter. I probably should do a little more reading next time I embark on such costly endeavors. Either way I am PSYCHED about getting this sucker built and to the range.

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

I called Rguns and they said chrome-lining is 1960s' tehcnology. Does that mean they just don't stock lined barrels or is chrome-moly good enough to neglect the chrome? My DPMS 5.56 barrel gets pretty nasty after about 20-30 rounds, I thought 308 would be even worse.

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

Most DPMS 308 barrels are stainless and some Chrome-moly. DPMS to my knowledge doesn't make a chrome lined 308. The new Bushmaster's which are DPMS patterned are available with a Chrome lined barrel.

Stainless has a good wear life and is easy cleaning but doesn't have the loss of accuracy possible with chrome lining

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

While chrome lining is "old technology" it is far from outdated. It has its uses, and places. Target rifles not being one of them for the most part. There are a few alternatives to chrome available if that's what your after.

Re: DPMS AR-308 uppers

Last questions, chrome-moly or stainless for a 24 inch mid-range target gun? Also, for the Rguns threaded uppers, can I just put on any brake (are they 5/8 standard threads)?
