I am researching what would be the most stable forearm for my new LR260/308 with the 24" SS bbl. I need a flush cup on the left side, a short rail on the bottom for my Atlas, and would like a rail on the bottom about half way for an angled fore grip. The rifle will be used for long range precision matches and steel plinking. I am concerned about loading the bipod on the ground and against barriers. I like the lighter modular styles of Midwest or Troy but am concerned with the strength of the 2 piece designs torquing. I like the attachment of the factory quadrails and the DD 7.62 lite rails but am concerned with the weight.

I will carry the extra weight if it means the forend is rock solid, but are my concerns with the 2 piece clamp on designs unfounded? Real world experience please.

Most of the "clamp-type" handguards are pretty sturdy in both design/construction provided that you get everything torqued down appropriately (and a little sparing use of loc-tite to keep things in place never hurt either).

I personally like the mount-up and features of the Apex Gator-grip handguards/rails. They mount up extremely solidly and offer just the sort of platform you are after, including the ability to mount accessory rails in multiple positions in variable lengths to suit just what you want/need and nothing more, as well as 4 integrated QD/flush-cup type mounts (2R and 2L), and the textured surface of the rail. They are also fairly light in weight with the extended, 15" model and mounting hardware weighing only about 12.5oz and the standard rifle-length only about 10.5oz (not incl any accessory rails, etc. of course).

Now, as for what rail/handguard will be the "most stable," you'll likely get a host of differing options, but personally, if strength and stability is your primary concern, then a 1pc mounting system/handguard will likely serve those ends better, but don't underestimate the strength/rigidity of the Apex, Troy and like rail systems.

Thin Pro 12" Inch Length Free Float Rail Semi Smooth For 308 on order for mine, have been running standard full tube with Harris stud and Seekin's rail/sling mount at 9 oclock.

Haven't noticed that i need a full 360deg & lenght rails, and paying x2 the price for most just because it's a 308 tube sickens me. the Thin Pro is under $99 and will give it a try. I would run a carbine length tube if i didn't think i would crush the gas tube somehow.

Apex one looks nice: Apex 2550 Handguard 308 DPMS GatorGrip Mid Length AR10 SR-25 Forearm
