thinking of using one of these barrels for my first lr308 build. what kind of accuracy are these barrels producing? basically trying to justify not spending 600-700 on a barrel that will shoot .5 when i can spend 200 on one that will shoot .75.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

$600 to $700 for a DPMS barrel? Man, go check out the barrels at Ranier Arms. Look under "AR Variants." You can get a Noveske for something around $500-$600 and they have lots of other less expensive ones too. I have't tried them all, but in my experience, Ranier doesn't sell crappy products.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

Rainier Select barrels are 259$ and they look pretty good to me without being heavy.

I know someone who might have an entire sass upper for sale if you're interested I can ask him.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

One of my customers has an SASS topped off with a NF 5.5-22x50. He asked me to zero it for him at 100. I shot my best group ever with that rifle, 5 shots in one hole barely bigger than the diameter of the first bullet out. It impressed me so much, since I really didn't put too much effort into it, I called DPMS the next day for some insight on how the SASS is put together. Only thing that stood out was the Montana Rifleman barrel blank was turned, ported, and chambered by DPMS.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

Midway has the SASS bbls for $239.99 and is in stock now. I've been nickel and diming my IRA/DPMS SASS build and this is the best buy that I can find, unfortunately its the bbl only, which means that you still have to buy a $100 GB, Mid Length Gas Tube, and Roll pin.
PRI makes a lighter weight SASS GB that looks pretty decent. I haven't read any reviews on it though. But anyways, here are some links for you.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

JCB, you're awesome dude! Just checked out the link and since that block works I think I'll give it a shot. Sure beats paying an extra 80 bucks when it says right on the DPMS website it works witht hte SASS bbl. This must be either a new GB or that I've just over looked it.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

Good luck with it. It says they manufacture that model. Potentially the other one is outsourced and as a result comes in at a higher cost to them. My experience with DPMS has been that they stand behind their products so you should be good to go.

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

The DPMS SASS barrel is extra fat under the handguards so I think if you have the standard DPMS handguards then you need the SASS block. If not you may have more clearance. Again, I'm not 100% sure but that's what I was told (and looking at mine there is almost no clearance between the SASS block and the handguard).

Re: DPMS SASS BARREL

New here, but this post caught my eye.

Had thought of using the SASS barrel and looked into why the gas block was so special. Fitting under the handguard is not needed if you go with mid length, so why not use other blocks? What is so special about the SASS block?

What I was told is the barrel contour behind the block is too large, and the tube cannot be inserted. The $$ SASS block has the gas tube hole higher off the bore line, so is a unique, low volume part.

One guy fixed it by machining a groove in the barrel to get the clearance. Anyway, what I read when looking into using this barrel. YMMV
