Dropped off my parts for my first build today! It's a Remington action, Krieger barrel (#5) and HS stock with center fed extended magazine box. Should be done in a week or two. Gonna be a 7mmWSM.

I am trying to decide if I should go with a muzzle brake while it's there. I will save $25 if I do it now, but really don't want to spend the extra cash now. I know I will wish I had a brake after I spend a day at the range.

Can't wait to get back into shooting. Will post pics of the gun when it's done.

Brake or no brake??

Re: Dropped gun off for build today!

Just get it threadded and have the smith spin up a thread protector blended into the barrel. If you decide later to add a can or brake its a self install...well mostly depending on the brake.

Re: Dropped gun off for build today!

after popping off several rounds at the range you are gonna wish you had the brake. Don't get me wrong, the recoil is manageable. But the brake makes it much nicer.

Re: Dropped gun off for build today!

The only gun I would put a brake on is one that I know would be 100% dedicated to the bench/target shooting only. If you think you might ever hunt with it DON'T... Otherwise do what Anchor said and put a thread protector on it. Keep in mind some times the difference of running a brake then taking it off and shooting will cause the groups to be different.

noisy for the shooter. Just have him do a brake and a thread protector at the same time.

I'm having one put on my 7SAUM and I will hunt with it. I just wear ear protection.

If you have ever taken a gun with a brake to the range and fired off a round before you remembered to put your ears on, you will know what I'm talking about, you'll only do it once.

Re: Dropped gun off for build today!

IMO it depends on the use. I know it is for hunting but how often do you plan to take it to the range and shoot it all day long? If you are just going to practice with it to stay proficient for hunting then I wouldn't worry about the brake. I have a Remington 700 Alaskan from the custom shop and I would imagine it weighs less than what your build will. Its chambered in 300 Weatherby Mag and recoil is fine. If I was going to take a day and shoot 150 rounds through then it would be a different story.

Agreed....

I had E.arthur Brown make me a 7mm mag barrel (not wsm but, rem mag) and I have the brake on it... Shoots so nice and kicks like a 243...
worth the extra $$$

+1, I put one on my 300 RUM, and I can now shoot it all day long. Makes it like a hot 308.

I got my break off the hide, a gentlemen here makes them, nice break for 45 bucks.

Re: Dropped gun off for build today!

Gun is finished! Shot my first groups at 200 yards today. Not bad for my first loads.
