Re: DTA SRS loads ?
I have the 18" .338LM barrel and was having trouble finding some 'recipes'. I am not new to reloading but am certainly no expert either, and wanted to come up with a good hunting round for moose bear and caribou. I settled on the 225 grain Accubond since I had good results with the 180grain version in a 300WM. I also wanted to use one of Hodgdon's 'extreme' powders to try and minimize velocity variations due to temperature spread. So far, I've only been testing at 100 yards (As this is the range that I have quick and easy access to. I've fired thus far only to 500m, but it's a bit of a drive for me to get to extended ranges). So far, this is what I've come up with:
Bullet - 225 gr Accubond
Brass - once fired Lapua
Primer - Federal Gold Medal 215M
Powder - H4350 - 85.0grains
C.O.A.L - 3.690
Avg. Velocity 2720fps
This is 1.0 grains higher than the 84.0 grains published as maximum in the Hodgdon data, but I didn't see any pressure signs and the bolt was easy to lift.
I selected the H4350 as it is a little faster than H4831 and with the 18" barrel n the Covert, Retumbo would be much too slow.
At 100 yards, 4 out of five rounds made one hole, but I know that's not really a good test. At 500 meters, I kept all five rounds on an 8.5 x 11" piece of paper, although I'm currently running a 3-12x50 S&B PM II. and was shooting off a wooden deck.
I haven't played with seating depth yet, nor done any ladder testing, just working up to try and maximize velocity out of the short barrel while keeping an eye open for pressure.
Hopes this helps,
Jim
