I am just about to start duracoating a few rifles with HVLP paint gun. Will there be a problem with cleaning up the metal/surface with paint thinner to degrease before applying duracoat(letting thinner dry and wiping down with a clean cloth afterwards). I will be painting a steel mag and handguard of my 450 bushmaster, and a few bolt action rifles.

Any suggestions or helpfull tips would be great.

Thanks

Re: Duaracoat ?

I actually use a good brake cleaner to wash the metal right before spraying. If you use a cloth on metal that has been sand blasted or roughed up, it will leave little pieces of cloth all over. I try to wash with brake cleaner, blow dry with compressed air, and not touch it before painting. It helps if you already have your hooks and rigging all set up too.

I second what dang472 says. Just make sure that the brake cleaner you use dries with no residue(It should say that on the can). I turn the flow down very low on my HVLP and set the pressure to 18-20.

Good luck! </div></div>
I have used brake cleaner and it works great also. It does cost more though.

Re: Duaracoat ?

I use a simple wax/grease remover and lint free towels, which you can pick up at your local parts store or automotive paint dealer. I use acetone to run through the gun when I'm done. +1 on the gloves, however just be known that acetone will eat some of the gloves up, so I advise to pic up a box of gloves while at the parts store. Usually the ones they will sell will resist thinners and such much longer than some of the cheaper ones.
