Hunting & Fishing Duck Boat Works on Turkeys Too!

We usually do this at least once a year.
It's a great way to cover a lot of ground and to get to those way back spots that most turkey hunters don't ever see.

We had this one at first hoot.
We set the hook with some sweet tree yelps, and then reeled him in with a flydown cackle, some yelps and a few cuts. A little bit scratching in the leaves put him within reach of the Benelli gaff!

Plenty of room in the boat for coffee and pastries too

Re: Duck Boat Works on Turkeys Too!

Just to clarify, we do not setup or shoot from the boat. That is not legal in many states.
The waterways we hunt are owned and controlled by the power company as part of their flood control authority.
As such, the flood plain is open to public hunting.
We must stay below the high water level or have permission from the adjoining landowner.
In the case of this bird, we were several vertical feet below the flood plain. The creek was just a few feet away from our setup.

Using the boat and getting on the right side of the creek is critical to success.
As most turkey hunters will tell you, getting them to a creek and getting them to cross one are two very different things.

Great Job, Tuck! gotta love the "by water" curvball, I got busted at 745 this morning, just about to whack the big one when his buddy started cluckn, he hit the dirt running, dagummit.

Re: Duck Boat Works on Turkeys Too!

I know the feeling, man.
This AM we had one screaming on the roost about 1/2 mile from us.
We busted ass across two creek and through a Hellish thicket.
Came out 100 yards downhill of him on an old logging road.
Put out a deke, setup, and gave him a couple of soft yelps.
He gobbled back immediately.
Yelped again.... nothing.

Gave it a few minutes, thinking he's on the ground and coming our way.
10 minutes later, we hear him about 400 yards in the opposite direction.

No reason we can imagine, other than he was all henned up from the get-go.

Re: Duck Boat Works on Turkeys Too!

I thought turkeys just went the other way for fun. They can be obstinate little creatures.
This years bird was 25 pounds, missing one spur amd the other was broke in half. On top of that I shot him a bit low and blew off 99% of his 10 inch beard. But he really tasted good.
