Gunsmithing Dumb question

Can you take a shot out barrel in say .223 caliber., send it to anyone and have it re-bored to a larger caliber, say .30 caliber? And if so, is it cost effective? Or are you better off just buying a new barrel?

Buy a new barrel. That would be way too expensive plus you'd have to have the bolt face enlarged.

You can rechamber to another .22 caliber fairly cheaply. But
22-250 would require another boltface. You did not memtion what type of rifle , Savage is very easy to change barrels on. Good luck.

LaBounty custom reboring can do it, and by reports does it well. He is listed as one of the few reboring shops that does the reaming and lapping steps to produce a custom quality barrel. There are some schools of thought out there that think a reboring job may have advantages in that the original stresses in a barrel may have been relieved over time giving an accuracy advantage. The quality of the smith is, I think, the ultimate part of the equation, and Cliff has a good reputation. JMHO

This was more of a hypothetical question. I do understand that you would need to change boltface when you go up in caliber. I am not looking for this service, I was just wondering if anyone is providing this service and if it was cost effective.
