Duracoat and stencils

Hi,

I've been trying to paint my rifle using duracoat products and stencils from a 3rd party. My experience is that after removing the stencils there are sharp edges left where the stencil edge used to be.

Does anyone have experience using stencils and how to get the best result?

Thanks!

Re: Duracoat and stencils

You can spray the gun again with a matte clear coat finish and it should fill in the raised edges. Krylon makes a really good clear matte, but make sure you get the flat finish.

I'm not sure though how Krylon will interact with Duracoat. I have only used the matte clear on a gun painted with Krylon.

One way to minimize build up is to spray across your stencil, not into the edge of it.
You could as noted above, hit it with a fine grit emery paper, or better yet steel wool, them flat coat it, the steel wool might leave an acceptable finish without the clear.

If you are doing more than one color always plan on a clear coat. Not only will it smooth the edges but gives the rifle a smooth flat look. You will always have a little edge with stencils but the clear coat will help. Spay less paint and enjoy!

another advantage of clear is if you still have edges you can lightly sand the clear and recoat without sanding off the color.

Re: Duracoat and stencils

Thanks for all the replies!

I have matte clear duracoat that still has to go over. I am using four colors and spray over the stencils. I will try the steelwool and then clearcoat it.

Just practicing on some stocks to get the hang of it before I go for my own rifles.
