I know this is the suppressor thread, but I figured this would be the easiest place to get NFA questions answered.

I'm looking at SBR'ing a lower I already own, and my understanding is I need to take the actions that follow

1. Submit a Form 1 for the manufacture of an NFA item. this needs to include a completed Form 1 with the requisite information, and the 200 dollar check for the stamp, written from the account set up for my trust.

2. Get the firearm engraved with the full trust name, city and state, on a clearly visible and legible surface, at a depth of no shallower than .003 inch and in a print size no smaller than 1/16 inch.

Is there anything I need to add, or should know ahead of time? also, how/where/is it possible to E-submit the Form 1? I have read several places that the E-files are getting a little bit faster turn around time, so I'd prefer to do it that way.

Appreciate the Help!

I'm no expert and just completed my dip into NFA items on Jan. 11th with an eFile of a form 1. The process was very simple and self explanatory. When it asks for your name, list the trusts name, not your own or members of the trust. Make sure you list the manufacturer/model or your particular lower as it sits now, vice what you'll be getting it engraved with.
Also, make sure your trust is validated. You must have at least one item (NOT the lower your submitting for) in the trust for it to be valid. Other than that if you hit a snag simply google it and you'll get your answers. That's what I did and hopefully it worked! Good Luck.

You do not need to write a check from the trust. You can use a regular personal check and this has been verified by attorneys. Easiest is to set up a eform account and use a credit or debit card. Sometimes the eform works without a hiccup and sometimes not. Just be patient!

Also you do not engrave until you get your F1 back.

I did not know that about the engraving, thanks for pointing it out. I would have guessed the engraving needed to be done first.

I was advised by the attorney that set up my trust that all payment for NFA items should come through my trust, just to keep it squeaky clean, so I actually have a debit/credit card attached to my trust with an EIN, as well as a checkbook.

When you say "hiccups" with the E-file, things like the website not working, or ATF not accepting the application or...? what kind of "hiccups" are we talking about?

Sideways, you posted "You must have at least one item (NOT the lower your submitting for) in the trust for it to be valid."

Are you completely sure about this? I was under the impression that you could just list the lower that you intend to use.

Thanks,
Bob

The hiccups I had this last time was the system went down while submitting. I finally got it submitted but I was not able to print the PDF of the submission as it said there was a file problem. I contacted the batf and they said they had not seen that issue before so they were working on it as the system was coming back up yesterday. They mentioned all my info was there but didn't know if it was capable of being approved so they were going to try to approve it so they could see for future reference if it happened again. If it didn't work I would have to resubmit it. It turned out they were able to approve it! So that being said I did get my approved F-1 four days after being submitted! That was as of about 2 hours ago!
I will say that my dealings with the nfa branch even if I had to resubmit it was definitely positive. They were genuinely interested in solving the problem. That I do appreciate!

Without an asset it is not valid. Most people use a ten or twenty dollar bill for the initial asset.

Thanks Paddywagon. That's clear to me from reading the 'memorandum' that came with the trust. So I agree with what you said.

What isn't clear to me (from Sideway's comment) is that the one item couldn't be a lower (which will later be used in the manufacturing of the SBR).

Dang, Maybe I should submit and act like there is a problem to speed it up lol

as far as the engraving goes, I know there is a minimum depth of .003 inches, and it must be the full trust name, city and state. Is there anything else recommended or required? should I get it cut deeper if Im going to cerakote over it?

I figure a problem like that is a once in a life time! Four day approval would be awesome, heck I'd be tickled pink about 4 week approvals!
I think you would be good to go. I use the Lauer Duracoat over mine after engraving. Duracoat like Cerakote are not thick at all. I try to put it in a discreet place that is visable but not noticable unless you look for it. Like on a AR it would be in front of the magwell or in the trigger housing.
