RE: the first part of this, actually I have seen members try to put brakes on threads going south, but we have no ban hammer (nor should we) and are generally powerless to do much except report something to a mod and that makes one feel like a snitch. Lately I have just stopped going to those continuing arguments. They just get dumb and dumber.

You guys don't have to look at the big picture, you can just spout off and walk away. If something happens I don't want any media outlet to have any ammunition against the community as a whole because I let people talk about shooting politician, or promoting extremist views. Pretty simple, we even tried to provide examples, copies of letters we wrote, etc. If you bothered to pay attention during the CO Gun Legislation you saw an example of positive political activism, nobody paid attention but those who were part of it, the rest continued on their merry way.

I see your reasons Frank, but I think your logic is flawed a little. It would be my perception that the majority of the time the people that do the talking are not the ones that do the action. You always hear that it is the quiet ones. So how many "visitors" come here and just read, never join and never post. Yet sit at home and digress about their situation in life and contemplate horrible things without anyone knowing. If said person acts on his thoughts then i doubt it will mater if he posted or not. That fact is you can not control what someone else is going to do.

Also I never self moderated for 2 reasons. One I never read anything here that really offended me much if at all. I have extremely think skin and believe in people's right to not think like myself, I understand this this is a private site. Also if I thought that the thread was something I would not like based upon its title I rarely would read it.

Yes I did see it. It was me who stopped it, and it happened in my own topic. I asked politely, and those users who were off topic stopped.

The problem is really clear to me, and it has nothing, in my opinion, to do with the 2nd Amendment forum.

It has to do with a lack of Moderators. Is the site larger than what it was originally? Yes. Same moderators are here, but it's still the same moderators. The site grew, but the available moderators are still the same.

There is less control because of that.

I asked to be a Moderator for a number of different reasons, all to benefit the Hide. Not myself(I like the idea of being on duty during the night when the spammers come out to play). One of the reasons was to properly police the 2nd Amendment forum without getting in the way of the those REALLY good topics. There were some topics that were some of the best I've seen on the Hide.

Heck, you can even have the original group of Mods as something akin to officers, and create Sub-Moderators akin to NCOs with provisional authority. The original Mods would police the Sub-Mods making sure that their doing their job properly Control is still retained, and improved, but there is also the ability to expand if needed in relation to the needs of the site.

As one guilty of posting touchy subject i can live with it and fully accept it (was posting as an easy to get info to either educate or disregard - as is everything posted by anyone on the internet) but i wonder just how this is going to be enforced as there are several active threads with such discussions or posts. But i've got the feeling the true intent is not to post anything about the Man and the rest is fair game. I wonder if tomorrow mrs. Barr ends up choked if it will be relevant what is in other thread here on the Hide (you know the kook and all...)

That right there is what I've also worried about. It would create such a shit storm that this place would undoubtedly be shut down and bring so many people under unwarranted and unwanted scrutiny. People don't realize, or simply don't think about or care, what the ramifications of their idle words can bring and that in itself is utter stupidity.

I hate to see the 2A section go but if it means keeping the Hide around, I'm all for it. I can talk politics and shit like that on Facebook and/or many other places. I am here to learn the craft of marksmanship and share whatever knowledge I can gather to other shooters, young or old.

The sad truth is that with the current state of affairs, politics and shooting are inseparable. Have you tried to buy a keg of H-1000 or Varget lately? How about your favorite bullets? It's damn hard, if not impossible, to find reloading components and there's no telling when things are going to improve. Friggin' politiicians are going out of their way to screw up our sport, attacking it every which way they can think of, trying to eliminate it. I wish we could all just ignore the politics but that isn't reality, at least not if we expect to be shooting in years yet to come. They've already F'd up my season of competitive shooting, I'm not going to shoot what I can't replace, I don't have a sufficient hoarde to do that. I can get the political dirt from other sites which have forums dedicated to political issues so eliminating politics on SH is no big deal I'd have to recommend that others do the same, staying informed about what politician is doing what to screw us or help us is worthwhile.

I am happy to join with you today in what will go down in history as the greatest demonstration moderatorship in the history of our websight.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Vote for VJJ Proclamation. In the 7 years I have been on this forum I have learned a great deal from nearly every forum on here. Not so much the 2A forum. Why? Because in all the categories on the hide, I can get the info the 2A forum from a million other sources. If it wasn't for the change in appearance I don't know when I would have noticed it was gone. I get it that now, things are different, the politics involved with the 2A is pretty hard to seperate in conversation. But there has been little effort to do so. Lately I would drop into the 2A forum for the same reason someone would visit the zoo. The definition of a contributing post must have changed. Posting a news article, followed by 4 pages of venting, delusional paranoia, empty threats, and sensationaly false statments didn't really contribute much. Eventually it was the same post, same people, same crap, slightly diffrent topic, and I noticed that most of the veteran folks stopped posting there. The same ones that LL mentioned, just couldn't find somewhere else, doing it just to feed off each other. SH and its now late 2A forum do not have a pivotal role in the 2A. I can't imagine there are members here who's sole source of information on guns is SH. Nor is it out of reach for someone to just Google a forum containing the info, argument, contraversy or conspiracy to fill that void. It doesn't suck that it came to this. It sucks that some people are so disrespectful and that they lack the integrity and self control to bring it to the level where Frank needs to treat this place like a kindergarden class. Some are still so blinded by their own ignorance, they think this is some attack on their rights....ect. Its not. If you can't get that, then Frank is correct in using the kindergarden method.

Kind of sucks since we need to be able to communicate 2nd Amendment issues with each other to help protect it.

Not all gun owners follow the news and are aware of 2A rights issues.

But I'm new to this board and didn't get to read the forum before it was closed, so if it was as bad as some say it was, then I guess closing it was best.

But it's not and that's the problem. Some of the same people complaining here are the same ones who fight with people in threads, post stupid BS and don't report the posts to get taken care of as they should. We have always had a mod alert feature but people rarely use it. People push the envelope and then you get what you have here. Frank finally saying enough is enough. Personally I have wanted to get rid of a few sections including Maggies Drawers which is just BS with posts like Hot Girlfriends and Motivational threads and has less to do with shooting than any other part but Frank wants it so it stays.

We have more than enough mods if people would just grow up and use us. This site is what you make of it.

Rob, I agree in general with what you say, but, VJJs jokes aside, what he says about what the Site is becoming is true.

This place is no longer what we make of it, because unmaking an infestation of morons is a job more suited to pest control than to a moderator.

We need standards; and, like anywhere else in the world, absent a revolution standards are never enforced from below.

Believe me if I had my way there would be alot less morons on this board. I would clean shop but if I did then they would all be complaining from alot of people in this thread as they wouldn't be here. Like I said there are sections I would also cut out like the Maggies Drawers, sports, movies etc. No naked pictures. None of the BS. Go back to shooting but it's not my site. If I get the ok from Frank I would go through this place with a slash and burn policy to idiocy and it would go back to what it was 7-8 years ago. That said letting a bunch of people who just want to be moderators to say they are run around the site is not the way. The people are in place but the order just needs to be given.

Agree whole heartedly! Get rid of the drivel and trash and concentrate on what brought this site to the fore, it's information. I used to be able to sit on this site for a long time to glean an education, but anymore, I'm here and gone in about ten minutes...

I can see the predicament Frank is dealing with. Having the 2A section and others such as Maggies Drawers and the Bear Pit could be a good addition to the site if people could follow a few simple rules; however, that is not the case because people don't like to listen and tend to take things to the extreme after they get butthurt from what someone behind a computer monitor thousands of miles away typed. (And going to the extreme can be very dangerous and give us all a bad reputation in the political arena). Its unfortunate that this needs to happen because some adults that haven't really grown up yet, but it might be for the best so we don't continue to bicker among ourselves and those people that want to further their political involvement can and will go elsewhere for that purpose. And those that genuinely just like to troll, cause trouble and be a general nuisance will also go elsewhere, making this a better site overall for its core purpose, for information on precision and tactical shooting.

Dump the entire site back to the original less than ten sub forums.
Sub Forums:
Bear Pit(small questions, non shooting, news, etc)
Maggie's Drawer's(humor)
Optics(scopes, bino's, range finders, etc)
Ka-Bars and Handguns(knives and pistols for the uninitiated)
Long Range Rifles
Fieldcraft/Tactics/Marksmanship Fundamentals
Reloading
Private

This will simplify the site back to it's original intent, focus, and remove most of the issues now present. Go back to bashing the new guys until they are no longer the new guys, beat down the POG's, and get back to Type A Shooting stuff. If someone does not like it, good riddance. If they cannot handle it, good riddance. It was a much better place then, with guys like(well, they know who they are, we all met at the annual Carlos Hathcock match a time or two)

I agree in principle the about the threads going off topic and getting ridulous at times.

However, Frank, in my opinion you are heading down a path that has a good chance of making SH obselete. 2A topics are pertinant to what we do. We can't get reloading componets, ammo, etc as a result of hysteria and threats to 2A.

Banning of such a relating subject to the shooting sports to me seems like Soviet era / Pravda tactics. (showing my age, sorry).

Better self moderating and more/better board moderators are the answer.

This site receives commercial/monitary support. Most of these companies have political stands, and I am sure have that stance posted on some web page somewhere. What if one of them is tasteless or crude? (impossible I know, but go with me on this). If they advertise on SH, some could misconstrue our stance. (Guilt by association)

All I saying is banning speech on a very related topic to this boards mission just seems hasty and wrong.

By looking at the membership numbers, I would also venture to say that there is a very large number of "non posters" who have issue with this decision.
