Hello,
My local range is having a egg shoot soon. 22LR at 100, and centerfire at 200. The eggs will be hanging by string.

I am curious about the relationship of the egg moving with the wind, along with the bullet en route to the egg.

Any pointers?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Egg Shoot

It's similar to shooting movers. Figure out with your MV what your time of flight will be. Don't shoot where it's at, shoot where it will be when the bullet gets there.

Re: Egg Shoot

Shoot good ammo. The cheap stuff is just to inconsistent as far as accuracy goes. I have shot hanging Golf Balls at 175 with cheap ammo and would get maybe 5 hits out of 20 shots. Some would be below and then you might get some high. It's hard to make corrections with ammo like that.

Re: Egg Shoot

Are these blown eggs, plastic eggs (empty or filled), whole eggs (raw or hard boiled)? If they are whole eggs it is going to have to be a pretty good wind to give you a big fit. Get as fast and accurate ammo as you can find to reduce time in flight and as has been addressed spend some time to learn the swing time and pattern of the egg. Reactive target shoots are always a good time. Enjoy the fun.

Re: Egg Shoot

I'll be using my TRG 22 with 155 scenars right about 2900 FPS for the centerfire. The eggs are raw. The eggs move pretty good in the wind. I figured if the wind is swinging the egg, sure enough my bullet is moving right along with it.

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Egg Shoot

If its not timed, try to wait for a broad side shot, ie; when the pointy end that came out of the chicken is not pointed back at you!
The guy hanging the the eggs has alot to do with it, hopefully the NPA of the egg will give you a broad side shot

Good luck and have fun,

the egg will swing like a pendulum the bullet will not, but both are predictable, the critical thing is the length of the string; that is what controls the time of the swing, I would experiment a little varying the length and have a way of determining that for the match, also aim/time for the end of the swing(slight pause for direction change)

Re: Egg Shoot

Some guys around here are shooting golf balls @ 250 yards hanging on a string. I sat one up to shoot last night. 4-5 mph wind from 3:00, moving the ball about the width of it. Shot three times on a target to get a zero, then started after the ball. Hit it the third and sixth shot. The hardest part aside from just hitting it, was aiming right back at the same spot you just held netting a miss.
Until last night, I had not realized how much room there is around a golf ball!

Re: Egg Shoot

A couple of us shoot eggs @ 300 yds off golf tees. Just open the crate and put 2 drops of super glue on the T and place on the egg. Less PITA than string. A tennis ball punched with an ice pick on wire or twine is a great/durable target They move and can handle 60 plus 308 rds at 300 rds as long as you do not hit the twine

Re: Egg Shoot

It would seem from a physics standpoint the optimal time to try and hit them is when they reach the end of their swing and have zero inertia as their rotation vector changes, they will be spending alot more time right at their direction reversal point than any other. I would start by observing how much they rotate, hold center at the edge of that point go for that, from a math standpoint that should offer the largest room for error

Re: Egg Shoot

Thanks for all the help. The shoot was a blast - it was really windy gusts up to 20.
Ended up with 2 of three at 100 yards with my 22lr and only one at 200. They were really swinging. What sucked was I finally got it figured out at the end of my four shots. After my turn I was able to stay set up and I ran four for four at 200.

It was a lot of fun.
