I'm not a fan of flat wire buffer springs either. Regardless, I'd swap out the buffer spring, 27 years is a long service life. I like Sprinco but there's a lot of good choices.

I tried it, it went in but wouldn’t come out. Had to unscrew the buffer tube to get it out again. Fuck that.

In my case the flat wide coils got stuck on the buffer retainer and the spring wouldn’t come out. Fucking nightmare. I use one of those micro polished standard springs now.
