Hmmm. I've noticed the fuel stops with charge ports along interstates now have large convenience centers that include restaurants, shopping, rest areas and showers.

EVs are most likely the next wave. If you don't leave your AO, no problem. Eventually, we'll see charge times drop just as they did with cellphones.

People are going to be renting Teslas know what they are getting into. The car will literally tell you it needs to be charged, where to go to get charged, how many people are at the current charger station and how fast its going to take to charge the veh. Also, with the Hertz deal, the cars are going to be programmed to where if a renter has a Tesla, it can automatically setup the car to the driver preset of their current Tesla. The cars do not have keys, just a key card or they can run from your phone.

As I understand from friends that own them, if you take a trip you just have to plan in "charge time" and plot your route based on where the chargers are

I regularly make 12 hour one way drives, stop for gas/pee/food/caffeine maybe 2-3 times in that entire 12 hours, and literally act like a pit crew at nascar when I stop. I can get stops down to 7 minutes if I do it right, and my journey is STILL 12 fucking hours.

No way in hell do I want to add 3 to 4 different 1 hour + long stops to charge only a retired 70 year old has time for that stupid shit.

As a second car to beat around town, back and forth to the store, (stores with chargers) it might work out. I work at home, shop once a week, have no need for a day to day local car.

I live in Houston too, there are chargers at HEB, several Cracker Barrels, dotted along all the major fwys in town ect. In the event of needing a charger, the car will tell where the closest charging station is, how many cars are there and at what rate of charge you can get at the station. I know of several Tesla owners and most of them charge at home, for the stuff they have to do around town, most of them almost never use the Tesla charging network. People need to get rid of the notion of having to go to the gas station. You charge at home. People driving more then 300 miles a day is actually quite rare for the normal person. When I was working at the dealership, I got to demo a Volt hybrid and going to work and back, around 25 miles each way, I could make it on all electric power.

I could see one as a second vehicle. The wife and I travel quite often (300 plus miles). I like to stop when I want to stop and not navigate to a certain point and wait whatever the current charge time is.

That said, I expect those to become non-issues as the technology advances and EVs become more common. Until then, I'll stick with a ICE.

PS: If/when I ever purchase an EV, the environment won't play a part in the decision as I believe they offer no advantages...as of now.

I'm sure somewhere Hertz did a study on the average mileage put on their rental cars, compared that to the range of current Teslas and found people don't drive them all that far. the customer ultimately chooses whether they would like an electric or combustible car so they probably know what they are in for.

Oh and some people will end up going with Hertz to (1) try a Tesla before buying it or (2) "drive green/responsibly" even though these are still a net negative.

And yeah, Elon was talking to his employees as owners. Think long term and save costs (didn't say cut corners) rather than rushing vehicles out (and making mistakes that put you in the news as a hazardous vehicle).

Maybe this thread should merge with the Pete Buttplug thread on how rural people generate the most emissions because they drive further...

I think I've been more than clear that I'm not ready to adopt until the infrastructure catches up with what we currently have and the single charge range matches what I get out of my current car's gas tank, and that recharging from empty to full takes minutes instead of hours.

PS: I see you were already schooled by someone who lives where you do and actually knows wtf he's talking about. It seems electric cars is starting to come close to vaccines/medical knowledge as far as Dunning-Kruger goes around here.

It is, however, a very important part of many people's car usage profiles. It means vacations and even weekend trips.

Closest place is 6 miles away. The point being you can't just go easily charge doesn't is charge… not gonna happen unless you just happened to live around the corner from one.

What? You obviously know nothing about the whole charging at home and charging the car in general. You have the old mindset. There are people making cross country trips all the time with Teslas, albeit, it's going to take them longer than normal since they have to charge the veh more often. You can do it.

Sure it can be done. You could also walk across the country (if you are really concerned about your carbon footprint). The point is its a hassle. I don't rent a car to be hassled. Now if you are gonna drive less than the range which I think is around 300 miles depending on battery and driving style than go for it.

So charging your car at the house is a hassle but going to a normal gas station isn't?

And driving a electric car isn't about being environmentally conscious. Most people I know could probably careless. But they don't have to deal with your normal ICE related maint, plus the Teslas are probably the most advanced cars on the road. I know plenty of car people that use it as their daily, is it the right veh for everyone? Hell no. But for the vast majority of the people out there, it fills the need.

I could probably count the times on my hand where I had to drive more then 300 miles in a day, in the past year or so, and that usually involved driving to Austin or Leona. Anything further, I'd fly.

I have made a conscious effort to change the way my family makes trips. For too long, we loaded up in the vehicle and raced from place to place- eat breakfast in the car while going from a-b, lunch in the car from b-c, and dinner in the car from c-d. Rinse, repeat. We were getting places, but it made me feel tired and old. And, the car was always trashed. Purchasing a new vehicle a couple of years ago was a perfect opportunity to change that mentality. No more eating in the vehicles. Ok, we'll grab a drink and a snack occasionally. But, meals are eaten in restaurants again. The vehicles aren't trashed. Yes, it takes longer to get places if we are stopping for meals. But, we are all happier when we get there. If I could get 4-5 hrs of continuous operation at highway speed from an EV, it would mesh well into our lives. Stop and eat, charge the vehicle at the same time. But, for most people, EVs mean changing the way they think about travel, and time-budgeting for a more leisurely trip.
